ST. GEORGE, Utah -- In its third series against a top-10 ranked opponent this season, California Baptist University got its offense going early to take the first lead of the game against No. 9 Dixie State. The Lancers' bats never quit, even after falling into a five-run hole, as they had the potential tying-run on deck in the bottom of the eighth.
The Red Storm was able to hold back CBU for a 9-4 win Thursday at Bruce Hurst Field, despite being out hit by the Lancers 18-12. A.J. David and Stephen Lohr (two doubles) both went 4-for-5 for CBU, which received three hits from Andy Crowley (3-for-5) and two from Antonio Chavarria (2-for-4, two runs, home run). The loss snaps CBU's six-game winning streak, as it moves to 20-15, 12-5 in the PacWest. DSU, which is ranked No. 1 in the NCBWA NCAA Division II West Region rankings, has now won 13 straight and holds a 25-8, 20-1 record.
Three-straight singles from Zack Norris, Crowley and Chavarria led to an RBI single from David to start the game in the bottom of the first. Dixie State answered with three-straight runs to take a 3-1 edge through two innings.
In the top of the third, Chavarria hit his second homer in as many games to pull the Lancers back within 3-2. DSU scored again in the third and three more times in the fourth to grab a 7-2 advantage. A walk to Chavarria and another single from David led to an RBI single up the middle from Lohr in the top of the fifth, bringing the score to 7-3.
When Dixie State pushed its lead to 8-3 in the bottom of the seventh, the Lancers knew time was running out and put together one of their best rallies in the next frame. Pinch-hit singles from Taylor Wetzel and Steven Pena put runners on with no outs, while a one-out single from Crowley loaded the bases. The Red Storm managed to dance out of danger to keep its lead in hand, while adding to it again in the bottom of the eighth.
There was never any quit from the visitors. David and Lohr started the ninth with a single and double into right field, respectively. Luke Navigato plated David with a sacrifice fly into center field to cap the scoring at 9-4.
Both teams will meet for a nine-and-seven inning doubleheader Friday starting at 3 p.m. The four-game series concludes Saturday at 10 a.m.
