ST. GEORGE, Utah -- After a tough loss to open the series, California Baptist University knew it needed a response Friday against Dixie State. The Lancers got just that with a doubleheader sweep of the Red Storm by scores of 10-1 and 11-9.
Offense led the Lancers to victory, as they outhit DSU by a total of 29-15 on the day. Adam Hofacket also keyed the first win for CBU by throwing the complete nine-inning game. Heading into the final game of the four-game set, the Lancers are 22-15, 14-5 in conference. The Red Storm had its 13-game winning streak ended to move to 25-10, 20-3. The series concludes Saturday with a 10 a.m. contest.
Antonio Chavarria was dominant at the plate for CBU, going 7-for-8 on the day with seven runs batted in, four doubles and a home run. In the first game, Hofacket struck out as many batters as base runners he allowed, with eight each. He allowed seven hits and one walk and threw 120 pitches in all. The standout pitching performance in the second game came from Andy Crowley, as he threw a spotless bottom of the ninth to log the save and secure the 11-9 victory.
Offensively, CBU out hit the Red Storm 18-7. Chavarria and Crowley fueled the offense with four runs batted in each. Chavarria was 4-for-5 with three doubles, while Crowley was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run. Jake Gallaway had four hits in five at-bats with a double and stolen base. Bryce Macy was also 2-for-3 in the game for the Lancers.
Chavarria chased home Zack Norris, who drew a leadoff walk, in the bottom of the first to give CBU a 1-0 lead. A one-out double from Gallaway started the fourth, but the second out was recorded, threatening to end the inning early. Crowley and Chavarria logged consecutive doubles to give the Lancers a 3-0 advantage.
There was little change in the sixth, as Chavarria continued his clutch hitting with a two-out double into center field that scored Gallaway and Norris, who singled and walked aboard. The 5-0 lead built to 7-0 in the eighth, which started with a Gallaway single and Norris walk. Chavarria was intentionally walked to load the bases and Stephen Lohr scored the eighth run with on a ground out. A.J. David laid down a bunt single to third base to increase the lead once again.
Macy and Gallaway set the table for a two-out, three-run home run from Crowley in the top of the ninth to cap the scoring for CBU.
In the second game, Chavarria did not miss a beat with a 3-for-3 and three RBI performance. Brian Ruhm was the only other Lancer with more than one hit in the game. Crowley and Gallaway also had two-RBI games.
The Lancers' offense exploded again in the day's finale, but scored a whopping eight runs in the second inning alone. The dream inning for CBU included eight hits and six errors, started with a Nathan Antoun walk. Three-straight doubles from Ruhm, Gallaway and Macy gave the Lancers a 3-1 edge. Norris was walked to put two runners on, and Chavarria blew the game open with a two-out, three-run homer making it 6-1. A walk to Lohr and single from David set up an RBI double from Antoun. A passed ball scored David and gave the Lancers an 8-1 cushion.
Crowley pushed CBU's lead to 10-1 with a two-run homer -- coming with two outs again -- in the top of the third. After Dixie State pulled within two runs, 10-8, in the bottom of the fifth, the Lancers added an insurance run on a Chavarria double, Lohr single and wild pitch.
Patrick Gonzales and Crowley helped bridge the gap to victory in the Lancers' bullpen. Gonzales allowed a walk but provided an otherwise spotless inning for CBU.
