RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Just a little over a week before the start of the NCAA Division II Championship Track Meet at the Grand Valley State University Track and Field Complex in Allendale, Mich., four California Baptist University runners were announced to be a part of the field for the first time in program history.
The NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Track and Field/Cross Country Committee announced the participants for the championships on Tuesday with a total of 754 participants, 377 men and 377 women, competing for titles. Student-athletes qualified for the championships by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event. The championships will be held May 21-23 in and will be streamed live on NCAA.com each day. For each event, the top-eight competitors earn themselves All-American honors.
Veronica Hall will be the lone female runner competing for the Lancers after she finished the year with the seventh-best time in the division in the 1500-meter. She boasted a four minute, 27.82 seconds time in the event this past weekend at the Occidental Invitational. The preliminary round will be on Thursday, May 21, with 12 runners making the final event the next day.
Hall also qualified for the 800-meter event at the UC Irvine Steve Scott Invitational on May 1 with a time of 2:08.81 to pick up the No. 11 seed. She will look to build on her top-12 seeding in the prelims on Friday to make the finals on Saturday, with only the fastest nine runners advancing.
Both Abdel El-Hajjami and Valentin Robert will vie for a championship in the 3000-meter steeplechase, racing in the prelims on Thursday for one of the 12 spots in the finals the next day. El-Hajjami picked up a No. 2 seed with his mark of 8:51.66, which automatically qualified him for the event back on April 3 at the Stanford Invitational. He will need to shave off at least 30 seconds in hopes of beating out top-seeded Tabor Stevens from Adams State, who boasts an 8:26.81 time. Robert sits in the 13 seed with his time of 8:59.44, picked up in March at the Occidental Distance Carnival.
Taylor Guske will look to conclude his stellar CBU career by competing in the 5000-meter event. In the fall, the senior helped the Lancers pick up fifth place at the NCAA Division II West Region meet, earning himself all-region honors with a ninth-place overall finish. Going into next week's track championships, Guske has a No. 18 seed with his time of 14:21.51 from his last race at the Occidental Invitational. In hopes of getting All-American recognition, Guske will need to shave off at least 15 seconds off his current mark, something Guske has proven he is capable of — he ran a full three minutes faster in the 2014 West Region Cross Country Championship than the year before.
