Tough Break

POMONA, Calif. — Playing its second game in three days, California Baptist University knew it'd have a tough test Thursday night. If the Lancers were tired, they didn't show it for the first 90 minutes, but had to fight through their second game with extra time of the season.
Overtime didn't go CBU's way, however, as Cal Poly Pomona found the golden goal to take the game 3-2. CBU falls to 0-3-1 on the year, still looking for its first win of the season. CPP improves to 2-0-1 with the victory.
Coming off a loss Tuesday where the Lancers didn't score until the last five minutes of the game, it didn't take too long for CBU to get on the board against the Broncos. Daniel Westholm gave the visitors the first lead of the night, scoring in the 27th minute.
"We outplayed them in the first half," said Coach Gregg Schroeder. "Daniel had such a beautiful goal. He collected it off his chest and roofed it in off the half-volley. It was well-orchestrated and a really good goal."
Six minutes later, CPP answered back to make it 1-1.
After only being on the field for 20 seconds, Aidan Apodaca brought the magic and made it 2-1. Wyatt Deane led the sophomore on a long ball, allowing Apodaca to run onto it and send his shot passed the Bronco goalkeeper.
"Aidan's first touch led to the goal," said Schroeder. "He got the ball on a great diagonal run and a pass from Wyatt and did what he does best. He's a goal scorer so he put it away. It kind of caught them off guard."
Coming out of halftime still holding a 2-1 lead, the Lancers looked to get some insurance. Apodaca tried to find his third goal of the season in the 48th minute, but the Bronco goalkeeper stepped in to make the save.
Without the insurance, CPP forced extra time with a goal in the 80th minute and held on for the remaining 10 minutes of regulation. The extra time wouldn't go in CBU's favor, however, as the Broncos netted the game-winner seven-and-a-half minutes into the first overtime period.
Keeping their quick play going, the Lancers return home to face UC San Diego on Saturday with a 4:30 p.m. kickoff time.
"We've gotten better and better but there are still some things we have to do in order to get the result," said Schroeder. "We have to learn how to fight through bad calls and the other team pressing. We have to develop that fight and finish off the game."
