Gonzalez Gets Going

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – After earning All-PacWest honors as a freshman in 2014-15, California Baptist University's Greg Gonzalez is determined to dodge a sophomore slump in 2015-16.
Gonzalez, a Riverside native, has certainly started the year on the right foot, as he finished the Lancers' season-opening Western Washington Invitational with three par-or-under rounds on Tuesday. His cumulative two-under-par 214 – capped off by an even-par 72 – earned him seventh place individually, which is a personal-best collegiate finish for the underclassman.
"I was really proud of Greg," Coach John Hackney said. "He had a really solid tournament."
It led to CBU tying for sixth place overall at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club, with an 877, which was just 10 strokes off second-place Simon Fraser.
Behind Gonzalez, Kavan Eubank, Tai Kuida and Chris Carew all finished tied for 27th place with 222s each over three rounds. Carew, a grayshirt freshman, shot 76 Tuesday, while Eubank and Kuida shot 77 and 78, respectively, in the final round.
Despite finishing the tournament in 44th place on the leaderboard, Christian Sanders out shot everyone but Gonzalez on Tuesday, with a 75. It gave him a 225 (77-73-75) overall.
"We battled hard on the front nine and were hanging around in the top two or three, but Dixie State had a great tournament," Hackney said. "It was unfortunate because we had such a brillaint first day. We hung around with some really good teams here, and that's a positive."
CBU is back in action next week, as it travels to Las Cruces, N.M. for the Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate.
