LA MIRADA, Calif. – After opening the season with relay competition, California Baptist University got to see what it could do individually on day two of the PCSC Pentathlon.
The Lancers secured a 300-plus point victory, with 767 points, in their season opener and saw Mackenzie Mergel, a true freshmen, continue to shine on Saturday. Pepperdine took second (409.5) and Azusa Pacific rounded out the top three (338).
While Mergel impressed with her swimming, CBU qualified its top-two divers – Bre Schlenger and Lauren Skinner – for the NCAA Division II Championships on the 1-meter boards on Saturday.
For the second day in a row, Schlenger won both of her events. The diver took the 1-meter with 262.30 points and 3-meter board with 249.20.
"We are definitely in a much better place from last year," Dive Coach Jeff Couto said. "She is about a year post-op from hip surgery and is diving the best I have ever seen her."
Skinner finished second on the 1-meter, as well. Her 259.10 points were also good for a ticket to the Division II Championship.
"We have two seniors who have qualified for nationals and are in tip-top shape, I am looking forward to what's in store for the future," Couto said.
Mergel went head-to-head with teammate and reigning NCAA Division II 1000-yard freestyle champion Christie Halverson and held her own. Mergel won the 500 free in five minutes, 1.70 seconds and the freestyle pentathlon (50, 200, 500, 100, 25) event (8:29.30).
"Mergel is the real deal," Coach Rick Rowland said.
Halverson bested Mergel in the 200 free in 1:55.08 for a .02-second victory over her teammate (1:55.10). She also took second in both the 500 free (5:05.03) and the freestyle pentathlon (8:32.14).
Alex Wolf won two events of her own, taking the first pentathlon of 50 fly, 50 back, 50 breast, 100 IM, 50 free in 2:55.04 and the 100 individual medley (1:01.36).
CBU won 10 events in all, with Kylie Mihld taking the 100 back (1:00.52), Hailey Golden touching first in the 25 free (11.46) and Alena Rumiantceva securing the 100 breast (1:06.14).
The Lancers went one-two in the 25 free and 100 breast, with Grace Oeser (11.51) and Melody Coleman (1:09.79) in those respective events.
