RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Coming off a huge margin of victory against conference foe Dixie State Thursday night, No. 10-ranked California Baptist University followed with another dominant win, beating Cal State East Bay 101-73 Saturday afternoon. It marked the eighth-straight win and the second consecutive game the Lancers reached the 100-point mark, as they have now won their last two games by a combined margin of 76-points.
CBU improves to 11-2 overall and extends its unbeaten streak in the Van Dyne Gym to 21-straight games. The Pioneers drop to 5-4 overall with the loss.
Cassidy Mihalko led all scorers as she posted a double-double on a career-high 32 points (12-for-15), along with 11 rebounds. She put up 21 of her 32 points in the first half alone. Courtney Nelson chipped in 19 points, while Kamille Diaz had 12 points and dished out eight assists – just two shy of another double-double.
After an early 5-0 start for CSUEB, the Lancers countered with a 23-8 run to give them their first double-digit point of the night, 23-13. Diaz capped the run before CBU closed out the first with a 25-16 lead.
In the start of the second quarter, Diaz got the action going off a three-point basket from the top of the key. An Erin Asher steal led to a Mihalko and-one opportunity to threaten a 20-point cushion for CBU just about halfway through the second.
It came with just under four minutes left before halftime as Mihalko drove to the basket and laid in the ball. The Lancers looked like they were going to put the game away early as they found themselves leading 53-26 at the half.
Even down 27 points, the Pioneers would not go away, as they tried to put some runs together in the second half and outscored CBU 29-19 in the third. CSUEB opened the period on an 8-0 run, but the Lancers refused to let their lead slip away any more than 17 points.
CBU took back control in the fourth, closing the quarter by outscoring the Pioneers 29-to-18.
CSUEB managed to cut the margin to 20 points with two and a half minutes left, but the Lancers sealed the deal in the final ticks on a 10-2 run to walk away victorious. Lexy Ram, Kristine Sellona, Diaz and Breanna Bilton all got in on the scoring action to secure the win.
CBU gets back to PacWest play next week as they host Fresno Pacific next Saturday, December 17, at 5:00 p.m. in Van Dyne Gym.
