RIVERSIDE, Calif. — No. 5 California Baptist University put its foot on the pedal early and never looked back to grab a 93-72 win over BYU-Hawaii Wednesday evening.
The Lancers improve to an impressive 20-1 on the year and 12-1 in PacWest. BYUH falls to 8-11 overall, 5-9 in conference.
Cassidy Mihalko was just one point away from tying her career high, finishing with 29 points (12-for-17). Courtney Nelson chipped in 16 points (6-for-16), while Kamille Diaz (5-for-11, eight assists) and Megan Frerer (6-for-6) added 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Frerer snagged 11 rebounds to grab a double-double, while Darsha Burnside also posted a double-double with 11 points (4-for-5) and 12 rebounds. The senior center also finished the night with seven blocks.
Mihalko hit back-to-back three-pointers to put the Lancers up 6-0 to start the contest. BYUH cut the score to 8-4, but couldn't seem to contain CBU as it took off on an 18-0 run before the Seasiders knew what hit them.
Frerer started the run with a layup in the paint off a Mihalko assist. She'd score six more points turning the spurt, while assisting on a Nelson bucket as well. Diaz sank a three to cap the run and the Lancers coasted the remainder of the quarter to a 34-10 cushion at the break.
BYUH tried to chip away at the margin in the second quarter, but couldn't bring it down lower than 17 points. The edge held firm at halftime, putting the two teams into the locker rooms with a 55-38 score in favor of CBU.
The Lancers started the second half in similar fashion, forcing multiple turnovers and keeping the Seasiders off the glass to open the frame with a 6-0 run.
CBU couldn't keep momentum going as BYUH managed to steal it for a bit, slicing the margin to 66-53 with less than five minutes left to play in the third. Still, the Lancers kept their composure and held a 74-56 edge heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
After BYUH brought itself within 78-62, Erin Asher drained a shot from the perimeter to put CBU just on the edge of a 20-point lead once more. Burnside tipped the Lancers over that line, driving to the basket with just about five and a half minutes to play. Diaz distanced CBU even more, sinking her own three to make it 86-62.
The distance held as the Lancers grabbed a 93-72 victory over the Seasiders, extending their winning streak to 13-straight games.
There's not much rest to recover as CBU heads to Dixie State for a 4:00 p.m. Pacific time tipoff. The Lancers return home for their final two games in Van Dyne next week, first hosting Dominican on Saturday and then concluding the regular home season against Concordia (Calif.) on Monday. Both games are scheduled to tip at 5:00 p.m.
