LAS VEGAS — California Baptist University met its match for the first time this season, but not before the Lancers had grabbed their sixth-straight mercy-rule victory.
CBU closed the Desert Stinger Tournament with a split on the day, beating Colorado Mesa 9-1 in five innings, but falling 4-0 to No. 21 Regis. The results move the Lancers to 6-1 overall, while CMU dropped to 2-0 and Regis improved to 5-4 on the year.
It wasn't until the third inning that the Lancers could get their offense going against the Mavericks. Jordan Mowatt led things off with a single to right field. She was joined on base by Krista Mann, who doubled to put the runners at second and third. Erin Burkhart then laced a double of her own to score both Mowatt and Mann, giving CBU a 2-0 lead with one out.
The Mavericks managed to get the second out, but CBU wasn't done yet. Jacque Lopez joined in on the double action, trading places with Burkhart to make it 3-0. It set Soraya Shahbazian up for her third home run of the weekend, a two-run shot over the fence at left.
CBU tacked on one more run in the fourth to hold a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. With Sarah Murphy on base, Hannah Thieroff laid down an RBI single to score Murphy from third.
CMU broke its scoring drought in the bottom half of the inning off a solo home run, 6-1, but it wasn't enough to slow the Lancers down.
Ali Subia rounded third to score on a Tayler Castro triple with one out to start the scoring. Castro then touched home off a Mowatt single to threaten an eight-run lead for the Lancers. They got what they were looking for as Mann sent Mowatt home on another base hit before the Mavericks could grab three outs.
Needing three outs of its own to seal its sixth-straight eight-run rule victory, CBU did just that. Kayla Hatch started it off by whipping strike three past the first batter and then secured the win by fielding a grounder and hurling it over to Subia for out number three.
In the nightcap, the Lancers would post five hits, including two from Shahbazian, but couldn't keep their hot scoring streak going as they fell 4-0.
CBU continues life on the road next week, heading to St. George, Utah, for another tournament. The Lancers open and close the tournament against Western Washington, beginning on Friday at 11:30 a.m.
