Offense continued to click for the Lancers, while their pitching remained stout for a formidable balance that was impossible for the Hawks to overcome in 19-2 and 10-0 CBU victories at Totman Stadium. The Lancers stay on top of the PacWest standings with a 16-5, 6-1 conference record. HNU drops to 4-15, 2-5, with Saturday's series finale at noon giving CBU a chance at a series sweep.
"We respect every team we play and treat them like they're No. 1," said pitcher Jeremy McDonald, who logged a shutout in game two. "We can't look past anyone, we just have to get going and then keep on the pedal."
Twenty-one hits from 11 different players helped fuel the Lancers' first win, 19-2, on Friday. Seven players had multiple hits, with Zack Norris (3-for-3, two runs, RBI); Stephen Lohr (3-for-5, two runs) and Mark Sanchez (3-for-6, two runs, two RBIs) all logging three hits. Antonio Chavarria (2-for-5, three RBIs, two runs); Brian Ruhm (2-for-3, two runs, one RBI), Jake Gallaway (2-for-4, three RBIs, one run) and Ryan Williams (2-for-4, four RBIs, three runs) each collecting two hits.
"It's just having a good approach, and that starts with our scouting," Williams said of the offense's success. "Our coaches always have a great scout to let us know what to expect. We have been aggressive and competitive, too, and that's the best compliment coach can give us."
There were three CBU homers in game one, with Williams hitting two out of the park and Chavarria adding one of his own. With 10 hits this season, four of them have gone out of the park for Williams, who has started eight of 21 games and played in 17 this year.
"Coach says simplify, so I look to see and hit the ball," Williams said. "I am not always swinging for the fences, it all depends on the situation. We are a situational-hitting team."
Dylan Stowell had a bumpy first and second inning for the Lancers, but rebounded in a big way. He struck out 10 batters and allowed eight base runners (four hits, four walks) and two runs to pick up his fifth win in six starts this year. The junior right-handed pitcher went six innings and retired the side in order from the third through the sixth inning, striking out the side in the third and sixth.
Pitching remained a strength in game two as Jeremy McDonald picked up the seven-inning, two-hit shutout. The left hander was dominant, striking out six and allowing five base runners on three walks and two hits. He retired the side in order in the first, third and seventh innings.
"I had everything working, really," McDonald said. "I wanted to build on my start at Dixie State. I had been throwing this way all fall and winter, but it got away from me a little bit to start the year."
Offensively, CBU had nine hits in seven innings in the finale, with DJ Porter (3-for-3, three RBIs, one run); Lohr (2-for-4, two RBIs, two runs) and Andrew Montoya (2-for-4, two runs, one RBI) all having multiple hits.
Two runs in the second inning put the Lancers up first in the nightcap. Chavarria led off with a double to right center and a throwing error scored him. Porter singled through the left side on a 2-2 count and then a grounder to shortstop from Gallaway scored the second run.
Montoya and Lohr singled back-to-back with one out in the third, and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with two outs. Porter came through in the clutch, bouncing a ball through the middle for two more Lancer runs, while a wild pitch scored the fifth run of the game.
A trio of RBI doubles from Lohr, Porter and Bryce Macy scored three more runs for CBU in the fifth. Montoya and Lohr plated the final two runs of the game with groundouts in the sixth.
Despite another day of lopsided victories, Holy Names actually took the first lead Friday with a run in the top of the first of the opener. Williams knotted the score with a solo home run on the first pitch he saw to lead off the bottom of the first. CBU would score four more runs on two-RBI singles from Sanchez and Gallaway before the inning was over.
HNU scored again in the second to make it 5-2, but that was it. The Lancers scored the next 14 runs. Williams and Chavarria each hit three-run homers the rest of the way to blow things wide open.
"We are on a big time wave right now, and we have to keep riding this," McDonald said. "We are all friends and we all have each other's backs. In a few hours, I am going to send out a group text to the team and let the guys know I'm proud of them and let's keep it going."
