That Escalated Quickly

KENTFIELD, Calif. — Things escalated quickly Friday afternoon at the College of Marin as No. 12-ranked California Baptist University exploded onto the scene in the first inning of action in both games against Holy Names. The Lancers grabbed two mercy-rule victories over the Hawks, defeating them 11-0 and 9-1, both in five innings.
CBU improves to 22-6 overall and 5-3 in the PacWest, while HNU falls to 7-19-1, 3-11 in conference.
Hannah Thieroff had a major day, going 4-for-6 on the day with four runs scored and another five batted in.
"We moved Hannah to the five spot today and she did great," said Coach Bill Baber.
Despite HNU getting an out on the first play of the day, the Lancers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first. Jacque Lopez led with a one-strike double to left center and was joined on base by a walk from Erin Burkhart.
The Hawks managed to get the second out, but the two Lancers tagged up on the fly ball to put themselves in better scoring position. Thieroff then singled through the right side to send both runners home before CBU loaded up the bases.
Heather Smith drew an RBI walk and HNU made a pitching change. It didn't matter to the Lancers, however, as Jordan Mowatt and Krista Mann each drew ball four to send in two more runners before the Hawks could get the third out.
CBU kept up the strong defensive play it's had on the Bay Area trip, taking down the HNU side in order to hold onto its 5-0 lead.
With two outs in the top of the second and Thieroff on third, Sarah Murphy blasted her first-ever collegiate home run over the fence at right, making it 7-0 early.
Ashley Coleman continued her dominant play in the circle, grabbing her first of four strikeouts of the day in the bottom half of the inning. She only allowed one hit for the Hawks and only walked one other to keep her fourth shutout of the year.
The Lancers only scored one run in the third, an RBI single from Burkhart, before putting the game completely out of reach in the fourth. Thieroff opened the inning with a bang, rocketing a long ball over the fence just to the left of dead center. Amanda Springstead then followed in a similar fashion, this time homering to right center, her first collegiate home run.
CBU still wasn't done, however, as Nicole Hennessey singled up the middle to send Mowatt home to put her team up 11-0.
HNU needed to come up with at least four runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to keep the game going, but Coleman and her defense wouldn't allow it to secure the 11-0 win.
The nightcap got off to a sprinting start as well as CBU scored four runs in the first two innings to jump in front 8-0. Thieroff grabbed a two-RBI double in the first, before she and Murphy took advantage of crucial Hawk mistakes to double the Lancers' lead, 4-0.
In the second, CBU loaded the bases quickly and Lopez sacrificed a fly ball to score Ali Subia, who tagged up at third. Mowatt tacked on another run as HNU got the second out of the inning, but London Miller stepped up to the plate and let one rip for a two-run homer.
HNU managed to get a runner in scoring position in the bottom half of the frame, but Kayla Hatch got out of the inning unscathed as she induced a fly ball to right to end the inning.
Murphy added an insurance run in the third, tagging up on a sacrifice fly from Subia to give CBU a commanding 9-0 lead.
The Hawks needed to score at least two runs in their chances at the plate in the third, fourth and fifth to once again keep the game alive, but they could only find one. Iveth Alvarado came into the circle in the bottom of the fifth and took HNU down in order to secure the win for Hatch.
CBU has one more doubleheader left on its Bay Area trip, taking on Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The two teams square off at the College of San Mateo.
