Comeback Falls Short

VALLEJO, Calif. – California Baptist University was unable to complete a wild comeback, like it did last time out, at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout. The Lancers finished in sixth place in the final round.
"We just came up a bit short today. No one had an outstanding round and we needed that one low score to finish strong," Coach John Hackney said.
CBU's final score of 609 (303, 306) from two rounds was just three strokes shy from placing third. Sonoma State won the event with a 592, while Western Washington took second (599) and Tarleton State third (606). St. Mary's of Texas and Academy of Art took fourth and fifth with a 607 and 608, respectively.
"We hit a lot of good shots, but just didn't score well. We still were not able to roll in many birdie looks, notching seven, which was one less than Monday," Hackney said.
Laura Scrivner and Sharon Oh improved on the second day with final rounds of 75 each. Natalie Park and Marvi Monsalve both shot 78 on the day, while freshman Erica Wang scored an 82.
Monsalve (12th, 151), Wang (17th, 153) and Scrivner (17th, 153) all finished in the individual top 20 for the tournament.
"Every round and tournament provides a learning experience, so we will take a short break now and get ready for our next tournament in Arizona," said Hackney, whose team will compete in Western New Mexico's Mustang Intercollegiate Invite April 1-2.
