CBU has scored 10 or more runs in six-straight home games now after posting 17-4 and 10-0 wins over the Urban Knights at Totman Stadium Friday. The Lancers keep their first-place edge in the PacWest with a 25-7, 15-3 in conference record, while ART U slips to 9-22, 4-13.
Offensively, Stephen Lohr, A.J. David and Antonio Chavarria led the way for CBU with five hits each. Lohr was 5-for-8 with two doubles, two homers, six runs batted in and five runs scored. David was 5-for-8, as well, with three doubles, a homer, five RBIs and two runs. Chavarria homered, drove in two and scored twice.
Ryan Williams and Mark Sanchez each batted 3-for-6 with a double and RBI each. Williams scored four times, as well. Brian Ruhm also batted 4-for-9 on the day.
"Hawaii is great but I was happy to get back home," Sanchez said. "We are just comfortable here, we know our field and we have the advantage. There's nowhere else we would rather be, we love playing here."
In game one, Lohr, David and Chavarria all hit home runs. Lohr was a ridiculous 4-for-5 with two bombs, a double, six RBIs and three runs scored. David was 2-for-4 with four RBIs, a double and two runs. Chavarria finished up 3-for-4. Sanchez (2-for-3), Williams (2-for-4) and Ruhm (2-for-5, three runs, two RBIs) also had multi-hit games to start the day.
Academy of Art opened the first game with a run in the top of the first, but CBU quickly tied it on a Williams single and two-out single into left field from Lohr in the bottom half. Consecutive doubles from David and Lohr gave the Lancers their first lead and Sanchez built it up to 3-1 with a sacrifice fly to center in the third.
The Urban Knights added another run in the top of the fourth, but the Lancers broke out with a grand slam from David and solo shot from Chavarria in the bottom of the frame. Lohr continued the barrage with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the sixth to make it 9-2.
Lohr also put an exclamation mark on a four-run seventh — which included an RBI double from Williams — with a three-run homer that made it 13-3. The final four runs scored in the eighth on a two-RBI Ruhm double and RBI doubles from Bryce Macy and Taylor Wetzel.
Ruhm was the only one to leave the yard in game two, and while his two-run homer in the third would have been enough for the victory, the Lancers added eight more runs anyway. They started the scoring with an RBI double from David in the first.
Despite being up 3-0, there was drama as CBU starting pitcher Travis Booth danced out of danger and stranded runners in scoring position from the second to fifth innings. The biggest threat came in the sixth when the first two runners got on. Booth bounced back with a liner to left field and grounder to first providing the next two outs.
With two outs and two runners in scoring position, Coach Gary Adcock brought on Brody Robinson out of the bullpen for the favorable lefty-lefty matchup. Robinson won out with a 1-2 strikeout to keep the shutout intact.
CBU's offense rewarded his efforts and ended the drama with a six-run seventh inning. Chavarria, Macy and Gallaway all had RBI singles in the deluge, with Montoya ending the scoring with an RBI double. Wetzel brought home the final run of the game with a bases-loaded walk in the eighth.
Outside of the offense, two solid starts on the mound helped CBU keep its distance from Academy of Art. Tyson Miller gave the Lancers seven innings, allowing 10 hits, two earned runs and no walks, while striking out seven. Morgan Earman threw a solid ninth, allowing one hit and striking out a batter.
Booth turned in one of his better performances, with 5.2 shutout innings on the mound in game two. He gave up six hits and three walks but struck out a career-high six.
"He competes," Sanchez said of Booth. "He's confident and he has worked really hard. He has the stuff, it is just a matter of him being confident and he has that this year."
Robinson was dominant, striking out three and not allowing a base runner over 1.1 innings. Austin Johnson closed out the final two innings, with just one walk and one strikeout.
Even with Friday's two wins, it is a tight race for the PacWest championship, with Dixie State (27-6, 15-4) just trailing the Lancers. The Red Storm have won nine-straight to rebound from dropping three of four to the Lancers in St. George, Utah, back in March.
"I think we would be lying if we said we didn't look at the standings a little bit," Sanchez said. "The bottom line, though, is we have to take care of business and handle things on our own end."
CBU will get back to that Saturday, as it concludes its four-game set with Academy of Art with a nine-and-seven inning doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon at Totman Stadium.
