RIVERSIDE, Calif. – California Baptist University coming off a successful run at the PacWest Championships earned its second-ever bid to the NCAA Division II postseason at the South Central/West Regional Tournament, with the announcement coming out Friday afternoon.
After a fourth-place at the PacWest Championships, the Lancers were selected as one of 10 teams in the West to compete at the 20-team regional competition. It will be hosted by Western New Mexico at the New Mexico State University Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M., May 2-4. The top-five teams and top-two individuals who are not on a qualified team will advance to the NCAA Division II Championships.
Chico State was the top team to go out of the West Region, followed by Cal State Monterey Bay, Simon Fraser and Sonoma State from second to fourth. PacWest champion BYU-Hawaii is the No. 5 team, with Dominican and Dixie State going seventh and eighth after the Lancers to give the PacWest four representatives. Western Washington and Cal State East Bay filled in the final two spots out of the West Region.
The Lancers are represented by two standout and PacWest All-Tournament golfers Kavan Eubank and Greg Gonzalez, who lead the team with respective 18-hole scoring averages of 72.83 and 73.62. Eubank took fourth at the conference championships and Gonzalez took seventh.
There is plenty of depth from there, as the rest of CBU's primary lineup this year – Christian Sanders (75.34), Christopher Carew (75.45) and Tau Kuida (75.96) – average below a 76. Carew and Kuida each tied for 16th in the PacWest, while Sanders was No. 24.
CBU and the rest of the West will be competing for five spots at the Division II Championships alongside South Central teams Colorado Springs, Colorado Christian, Western New Mexico, Dallas Baptist, Oklahoma Christian, St. Mary's (Texas), Cameron, St. Edward's, Midwestern State and Regis (Colorado).
