AZUSA, Calif. — With a PacWest title on the line, No. 17-ranked California Baptist University came out fired up against rival No. 22 Azusa Pacific. Unfortunately, the Lancers couldn't hold the Cougars off and fell 3-2 and 1-0 Friday night.
CBU drops to 41-11 overall, heading into the postseason, and finishes with a 24-8 conference mark. APU finishes the regular-season with a 38-10, 25-5 PacWest record.
Jacque Lopez got things going early in the opener, turning on her second pitch of the game and sending it over the fence just left of center field. It was her third home run of the season, with all three coming in the last seven games.
Krista Mann tacked on some insurance in the fifth, blasting her eighth homer of the season over the fence at left field to make it 2-0 in favor of the visitors. CBU finished with eight hits in the game, including two each from Lopez (2-for-4) and London Miller (2-for-3).
Ashley Coleman and her defense put up five solid innings of work, not allowing a single base runner until the bottom of the sixth. The Cougars got the luck of the bounce as they loaded up the bases and managed to send all three runners home on a triple before CBU could get out of the inning.
With pressure on to score at least one run to extend the game, Ali Subia led off with a single up the middle and Jordan Mowatt followed with a well-struck bunt, splitting two Cougar infielders to safely reach first for the base hit. APU secured the 3-2 win, however, with the third out.
The Lancers dropped the nightcap 1-0. Mowatt went 2-for-2 in the game, with Miller also grabbing a hit.
CBU, which ranked second in the last NCAA Division II West Region rankings, will find where it stands Monday morning. The selection show is set to air on ncaa.com/live at 7:00 a.m. Pacific time, with the top two seeds hosting one of two regionals May 5-7.
