RIVERSIDE, Calif. — For the first time in program history, No. 2-ranked California Baptist University picked up hosting rights for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Division II postseason tournament. After a first-round bye, the Lancers put a huge exclamation point on their first game with a 5-0 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Lancers improve to 17-0-2 with their ninth-straight victory, tying the program record set in 2010 for longest win streak. The Toros end their season with a 13-5-3 mark.
"Today I told the guys that they don't have to try and do anything special, they just need to be themselves and if they are, we will win," said Coach Coe Michaelson. "In the end, we are very happy with both the performance and the result."
It was all CBU early, outshooting CSUDH 29-to-3 with a 12-to-2 shots on goal margin. The Lancer defense (Abe Placito, Gabriel Silva, Uriel Mosqueda, Dario Garcia and Joey Scotti) didn't allow a shot until the 55th minute and only needed Edgar Benitez to make two saves to keep the clean sheet.
Aidan Apodaca got things going in the 30th minute, scoring on a breakaway off a Sebastian Wiesbock through ball.
Seven minutes later, Victor Aguirre scored his first goal of the season to make it a 2-0 lead. Joey Chica laid the ball back to Aguirre, who fired off a shot into the far post pocket from about 30 yards out.
CBU walked into halftime with a 2-0 lead and never looked back.
Less than four minutes into the second half, Apodaca struck again. The senior forward – who leads all of NCAA (Divisions I, II and III) in scoring – tapped in his own rebound for his 29th goal of the year.
Despite the 3-0 lead, CBU wasn't satisfied and kept pushing for more. It came in a quick spurt as Preston Judd scored back-to-back goals in the 86th and 87th minutes – just a minute and 12 seconds apart – to cap the scoring at 5-0.
The first goal came off a Daniel Westholm assist, while the second came off a Chris Heckenberg dish. The freshman took it down the right-side of the flank and crossed a byline back to Judd, who one-touched it in.
CBU takes on Cal Poly Pomona for the NCAA Division II West Region Championship in Wichita Falls, Texas on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. Pacific. It'll put two of the division's top scorers up against each other with CPP's Sergi Monso ranking fourth with 18 goals on the year. Midwestern State gets hosting honors for the South Central Region and will face Colorado School of Mines on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. Pacific.
"We know that Cal Poly Pomona will be a very fun and challenging game and we can't wait," said Michaelson. "Looking forward, we don't need to win a national title all at once, we just need to win the next game and that will continue to be our goal."
