Lancers Ready for WWPA Championship

LA JOLLA, Calif. – A program-best seed has California Baptist University hopeful it will achieve more history at the Western Water Polo Association Championships this weekend.
The Lancers' highest placings at the WWPA Tournament are fourth-place finishes from the last three years, but they are seeded third for the first time ever after being No. 4 in 2016. CBU opens the conference tournament against Loyola Marymount on Friday at 4 p.m. at UC San Diego's Canyonview Aquatic Center.

When the 17th-ranked Lancers and Lions met earlier this year, CBU pulled out a 13-5 victory in Riverside. CBU finished the year with a 20-12, 4-3 in conference record and LMU wound up 6-19, 2-5.
Five Lancers earned All-WWPA honors on Wednesday, with two-meter Jonny Lotero and utility Tanner Shore picking up first and second-team distinction, respectively. Driver Dominick Nevarez and goalie Gabe Thorne earned honorable mention, while Joseph Galgani received All-Freshman Team recognition in the conference.
Loyola Marymount has relied on is All-WWPA second-team defender Matt Braun and All-Freshman utility Alessio Brunochelli this year. Braun led LMU with 42 goals, 51 points, 32 steals and 28 sprint wins in the regular season. Brunochelli finished second on the team with 31 goals, while his 41 points are third-most for LMU. He also has 10 assists and 17 steals on the year.
Without any first-round byes this year, the winner between CBU and LMU will advance to the semifinals on Saturday at 5:45 p.m. to face the winner of Friday's 12:45 p.m. game with second-seeded UC San Diego and No. 7 Santa Clara. The losers of both those games will face off at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
CBU has been oh-so close to a berth to the conference championship game the last two years, as well. The Lancers hung with eventual WWPA champion UC Davis until the very end in a 5-4 loss in 2016 after they lost to the Aggies by one goal, 14-13, in the 2015 semifinals.
