SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — California Baptist University battled for 110 minutes, but settled for a 0-0 draw at Dominican University of California on Thursday.
The Lancers now sit 11-4-2 overall, 9-1-2 in the PacWest and still in control of their destiny. Fresno Pacific also picked up a draw today at Chaminade (2-2), to sit one point behind CBU in the PacWest standings. The Penguins hold a 6-8-3, 4-6-2 mark with the result.
"We started the game a little slow but quickly corrected that and proceeded to dominate the game on both sides of the ball," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "Our defensive shape was very good and our attacking shape created some great scoring opportunities. Road games in this conference are always difficult. We played and battled really well, unfortunately we hit the post twice, had a goal called back and their keeper came up with some good saves to keep them in the game."
CBU was a little unlucky on the finishing end, out-shooting Dominican 21-to-6. The Penguin goalkeeper made eight saves, while her defense cleared one off the line as well, to keep the Lancers at bay.
Rebecca Romero gave the Lancers a good look in the 78th minute, putting a shot on frame but it was kicked just in time by a Penguin defender before it crossed the line to keep it 0-0.
Haley Wheelon came close to grabbing the golden goal in the 98th minute, but it was just a little too high as it ricocheted off the crossbar to keep it scoreless.
The Penguins had their chances, too, forcing Sara Escobedo to make four saves to keep the shutout.
CBU has one last game left in the regular season, heading to Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday for a noon kickoff. The Lancers have a chance to guarantee an extension to their season into the postseason with a win over the Argonauts. It would give CBU the automatic qualifier from the conference, along with its second PacWest Championship.
"We'll go back to work tomorrow and prepare for NDNU on Saturday," said St. Clair.
