BELMONT, Calif. — For the second game in a row, California Baptist University battled for 110 minutes but couldn't find the back of the net and settled for a 0-0 draw at Notre Dame de Namur.
The automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division II tournament and PacWest Championship were on the line, but the tie didn't take the Lancers out of the running. It just meant CBU had to play the waiting game until Hawai'i Pacific and Fresno Pacific finished their game in Hawaii. That game also took double overtime, but fortunately for CBU, it resulted in a 1-1 tie to give the Lancers the conference championship and the AQ.
"I'm really proud of this team and impressed with the players resolve and grit," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We have dealt with a number of injuries throughout the year but especially in the last 10 days so we knew these last two games on the road would challenge us. Despite our injuries and playing two double overtime games in 48 hours we fought hard and played very well. We created some fantastic scoring opportunities and our defense was stellar. We were a bit unlucky on the finishing end but we'll sharpen that up in training."
CBU ends the regular season at 11-4-3, 9-1-3 in the conference with its third PacWest title. The Argonauts end their season with an 8-6-4 overall, 5-4-4 conference mark.
Sara Escobedo came up big with nine saves to grab her 25th career shutout, which ranks first in the all-time record book. Escobedo also holds the career saves record, putting her tally to 303 after today's game.
Haley Wheelon gave CBU a good look in the 12th minute, forcing the NDNU goalkeeper to push it wide for a corner kick. Jordan Dow then challenged the keeper off the corner, but she made the save to keep it 0-0.
Rebecca Romero got in on the action in the 34th minute, but it was just a little too wide as it hit the post and went out.
Coming out of halftime, NDNU tried their luck early and made Escobedo make two saves within 30 seconds of another before the Lancers could get it out of danger.
Both teams were pushing to break through, but neither could find the back of the net to send the game into overtime.
Things really kicked into another level in the second overtime period, with it coming down to the final minutes.
CBU earned itself a corner kick with just over two minutes left to play and Miranda Hald got her head on the end of it, but it went high. It was the last chance for either team, ending the game in the 0-0 draw.
The Lancers will find out on Monday where they are headed for the postseason, with the NCAA Women's Soccer Selection Show airing on the NCAA website at 3:00 p.m. Pacific.
"As we have all year, we focus on our execution and performance," said St. Clair. "We look forward to getting back to work on Monday and seeing who our next opponent will be. Winning the PacWest title and getting back to the NCAA tournament were two of our team goals this year, it's great to achieve those and now move on to compete for a national championship."
