CBU Falls to ACU to End the Regular Season

ABILENE, TX--- The Western Athletic Conference regular season came to a close on Sunday afternoon as the California Baptist women's soccer program finished against Abilene Christian. The Lancers ultimately lost 2-1 to the Wildcats and finished with a 6-3-1 conference record, earning themselves a second-seed position in the WAC Tournament next week.

It was a quiet first half in Abilene as neither team was able to find the back of the net for the first 40 minutes of the match. Abilene Christian broke the stalemate in the 42nd minute with a cross that found a Wildcat's head to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. The deficit wouldn't last long after a penalty was called in favor of CBU, and Anja Jestrovic buried her fifth goal of the season to knot the game at one.

After battling in the final thirds of the field, an unfortunate touch by Rebecca Winton on a pass back from the Lancer defense would provide just enough space for ACU to poke the ball away and find the back of the net for the game-winner.

"We were a bit sluggish in the first half, but that's not surprising considering we're battling injuries and sickness right now," remarked Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. "Second half was much better as we tied up the game within a minute. Our possession and attacking opportunities were so much better. Their second goal was an accidental missed clearance. We pressed well creating breakaways later in the game just ran out of time. It was good to get everyone time on this last trip in preparation for WAC conference play next week".

Despite ending the regular season on a loss, CBU will continue its quest to return to the NCAA Tournament next week, beginning on Wednesday. The Lancers will battle the three-seeded Utah Tech at 1 pm. PST in Orem, Utah, during the first match of the tournament.
