CORONA, Calif. – A strong first round put California Baptist University in position to repeat at its host tournament and the sixth-ranked Lancers finished the job Tuesday in the second and final round of the CBU Invitational.
All four of the Lancers' scorers shot 79 or better, as CBU won its event with a 15-stroke, first-place cushion and 603 (298-305) total. Eighteenth-ranked Cal State San Marcos took second (618), followed by No. 29 Sonoma State in third (619). It gives the Lancers their third victory of the year and second straight, while continuing their season-long streak of not finishing outside of the top four.
"Golf tournaments are not won on the first day but they can be lost on the first day," Coach Marc Machado said. "After day 1, We definitely gave ourselves a shot to win going into the final day. We game planned our first four holes coming into today, and then focused on our last four holes because golf tournaments in college are won and lost on the last four holes. That's where we won it, we showed a lot of stamina, heart and finished it off."
On top of that, Marvi Monsalve won the individual title for CBU with a one-over-par total of 145 (71-74) after she carded a 74 Tuesday. It was a big shot of momentum for Monsalve, who had taken second at the CBU Invite in 2016 and 2014.
"I got nervous when I realized I was close to winning, but Coach helped calm me down on the last few holes," Monsalve said. "Winning the home tournament my senior year and winning with my team was really exciting."
Machado was overjoyed for Monsalve, whose previous best individual finish this season was seventh place. Monsalve came back from consecutive bogeys at holes eight and nine with a birdie on a par three at 10.
"I am so pumped, Marvi is such a huge part of this team, not only through golf, but personality wise as well," Machado said. "I am so proud of her."
CBU's entire senior trio led the way throughout the tournament, with all three taking top-nine positions. Along with Monsalve, Natalie Park took fifth with a 150 (71-79) and Laura Scrivner came in ninth at 152 (75-77).
"It was so awesome to see all three of them contribute," Machado said. "You never know who in the five is going to step up one day to the next with golf. The three of them carried us."
Scrivner carded three birdies and picked up a big par putt on a challenging pin at hole 10 to help her shoot 77 on Tuesday. Park avoided any disasters and logged 11 pars for a 79 on the day.
"Our goals aren't to win, we set personal goals for ourselves," Park said. "We stick to our personal goals and that's paying off for us."
Erica Wang improved six strokes from rounds one to two, with a 75 on Tuesday, and finished 21st with a 156 (81-75). The sophomore turned in three birdies in round two.
Sharon Oh turned in a complete performance in the event as an individual. The sophomore took 11th in the 100-player event with a 153 (76-77). Jordan Martin and Evelyn Nguyen also competed as individuals and matched each other in both rounds, shooting 75 in the second for identical 157s (82-75) for 24th-place finishes.
Samantha Martirez cut seven strokes off her score from Monday with an 82 in the second round for a 171.
"It feels good to repeat and have it be way less stressful than last year," Scrivner said. "We are all really supportive of each other and competitive with each other, and I think that really helps us."
