VALLEJO, Calif. – A strong start put California Baptist University in position to win its third-straight tournament and knock off the top-ranked team in NCAA Division II at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout.
One of Coach Marc Machado's focuses has been on finishing well, and the sixth-ranked Lancers did just that to maintain their day-one form and win the Cal State East Bay hosted event Tuesday at the Hiddenbrooke Golf Course.
"I always tell the team, you can't win a golf tournament on the first day, but you can lose it," Machado said. "They put themselves in a good position to have a chance after day one, and today they finished like champs. Our last four holes on day one from the four counting scores was six-under and today the last four holes from the 4 counting scores was one-over. We showed tremendous heart in how we were able to finish off both of our rounds; how you finish rounds is very key in college golf."
CBU won the event comfortably by 17 strokes, with a 588 total, after shooting 295 on Monday and 293 Tuesday. All five Lancers finished in the top-10 individually and Sonoma State took second in the tournament (605) and top-ranked Barry finished third (609).
"This is a special group and we are constantly reminding each other that it's not about you or any another team in the field ... it's all about this team and accomplishing our goals that we set out," Machado said.
Senior Laura Scrivner won her second career individual title after shooting even-par 72 Tuesday for a 145 total. The senior bogeyed twice, but birdied holes two and 16 to counteract them, while playing the final nine holes one-under.
"Laura was amazing with her short game," Machado said. "Her chipping and putts from five feet and in the whole tournament were great. She was the true definition of steady. This was a very stacked field and she didn't shy away from the challenge. She finished her rounds off exceptionally well."
It was a total team effort this week, as CBU accepted four scores of 74 or better in round two. Three Lancers, including Scrivner, earned all-tournament honors with top-five finishes. Marvi Monsalve took fourth with a 148 (75-73) after shooting one-over on Tuesday.
"She didn't have her best stuff this tourney and struggled with her swing, but Marvi is the type of player that even when she doesn't have her best stuff, she can still get it done for the team," Machado said.
Wang won the tie-breaker for the fifth and final all-tournament spot with a lower second-round score (74). The sophomore carded a 149 (75-74) in total and logged three birdies on Tuesday.
"Erica was superb and always leads by example," Machado said. "Her wedge game and positive attitude are what stick out regarding this specific tournament. She had great bounce back stats after a bad hole and she never gave up. She gives the team such positive energy and is so crucial to the team's success."
Samantha Martirez overcame two bogeys right out the gate to shoot 74 on Tuesday and take seventh individually with a 150 (76-74). The true freshman carded four birdies over holes one to six.
"She is going to be a very special player for us when we look back at her four-year career," Machado said of Martirez.
Natalie Park took 10th place of the 96-player field with a 152 (72-80). Sophomore Sharon Oh finished 51st with a 170 (81-89).
CBU takes a week off before heading to Seaside, Calif. for Cal State Monterey Bay's Otter Invitational. The event is hosted at the Black Horse Golf Course March 20-21. It is the second to last regular-season tournament before the PacWest Championships on April 24-26.
