VISTA, Calif. – Even after the midseason hiatus, California Baptist University proved to be at its best in the final round of tournaments at the Fujikura Invitational on Tuesday.
The 23rd-ranked Lancers in NCAA Division II recorded their best round of the tournament, with a 298 in Tuesday's third round at the Shadowridge Golf Club. It was a six-stroke improvement from their previous best of 304 in round two and secured a fourth-place finish for CBU, with a total of 909 (307-304-298).
Cal State Monterey Bay, the No. 9 team in D-II, won the event with an 870. Host Cal State San Marco finished second (896) and Texas Wesleyan took third (907). It is CBU's third top-four finish this season.
Kendel Hodges and Tai Kuida secured top-10 finishes individually for the Lancers. Hodges accumulated a 223 (75-74-74) over all three rounds to come in sixth, while Kuida's 225 (71-79-75) was good for eighth place.
Trevor Lampson turned in the low round of the day for CBU, with a 73 that included two birdies at holes eight and nine. Hodges and Kuida followed with a 74 and 75, respectively, as Hodges birdied once and Kuida did so twice.
Christian Sanders chipped in a 76 to complete the scoring. Greg Gonzalez was on the edge of tying Sanders, with a 77 – an impressive dropped score for the Lancers. Gonzalez (80-75-77) and Lampson (83-76-73) tied for 27th, each with 232s, while Sanders finished the tournament with a 236 (81-79-76).
