Lampson Sets Lancers Record

CORONA, Calif. – Trevor Lampson kept his dominant run going for California Baptist University and won his second-straight individual tournament title, while setting a program 54-hole scoring record. It helped guide the 15th-ranked Lancers to a third-place finish at the Battle at Eagle Glen on Tuesday.
Lampson has now finished top two in the last three events, while CBU continues its streak of top-four finishes in the five tournaments it's played since February. The Lancers shot 289, the second lowest round of the day, to move them up to a third-place finish with an 881 total (298-294-289).
"Trevor needed to figure out his putting and gain some confidence there, and he's done that," Coach TL Brown said of Lampson's hot streak. "He gives himself a lot of opportunities inside 12 feet because he's hitting his irons really well right now. He doesn't make things too difficult or too complicated, he makes it simple and sticks to a gameplan."
Three PacWest teams finished in the top-three spots. Sixteenth-ranked BYU-Hawaii won the event, with an 865, while Holy Names took second (875). All three topped sixth-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay in ninth place (907).
"Hats off to BYU-Hawaii, they really showed their depth this week," Brown said. "It was nice to battle again on the last day, but I wish we had a little bit more of that on Monday. If we play like we're capable we're hard to beat."
The top-five individual finishers earned all-tournament team honors in The Battle at Eagle Glen, with a USGA tiebreaker settling a four-way tie for fourth. Lampson, BYU-Hawaii's Nicolas Herrera, Holy Names' Zach Sims and Kyle McClay and Simon Fraser's Chris Crisologo all earned the all-tournament tag.
After coming into the day in second place, Lampson shot four-under-par 68 in the third round to put together the lowest 54-hole total in CBU history. Lampson birdied seven times in Tuesday's final round, going four-under from the fifth to the ninth hole and four-under from 14 to 17.
It vaulted him past the first-day leader, Herrera, who went into Tuesday with a two-stroke lead. He was forced to settle for second, with a 209 (66-71-72), although it came down to the end for those two, who were paired together in the third round.
"I think Trevor was even a little shocked himself," Brown said. "He kind of carried the team on his back this week. We all battled but watching him execute was a lot of fun. His putter sealed the deal for him down the stretch. He played conservatively on the 18th hole to solidify the win, which was a veteran move for a freshman."
Three Lancers, including Lampson, turned in their best rounds of the week on Tuesday. Christian Sanders recorded his season low, with a one-under 71, to add to CBU's success on Tuesday. The senior birdied three times and played his final eight holes two-under par. Sanders finished 32nd individually, with a 226 (75-80-71).
"It was so important from the team to have that type of performance from Christian," Brown said. "I was proud of him finishing the round the way he did. We will need more of that for him heading into the postseason."
Greg Gonzalez gave the Lancers three scorers at 74 or better after recording three birdies in the third round. The junior finished 37th overall, with a 228 (78-76-74). Tai Kuida put together his best performance of the tournament on the final 18 holes, as well, carding a 76 to complete the scoring quartet on the day.
Kuida accumulated a 231 (77-78-76) in the tournament, while Kendel Hodges finished in 36th place with a 227 (76-71-80).
There is just one more regular-season tournament on the docket for the Lancers. They travel to Goodyear, Arizona's Palm Valley Golf Club for the Mustang Intercollegiate April 3-4 before taking on the PacWest Championships in Hawaii April 24-26.
