SEASIDE, Calif. – When it was needed most, California Baptist University put together the finest final round of the 18-team field to climb five spots up the leaderboard and finish second at the Cal State Monterey Bay Otter Invitational on Tuesday.
Three of the fifth-ranked Lancer golfers finished in the top-10 of the 99-player tournament, while CBU took second as a team with a 618 total by improving 12 strokes on its first-round score (315) with a 303.
"Our main goal was to represent Christ, CBU and the CBU women's golf team with the best attitudes," Coach Marc Machado said. "I told the girls with that as our foundation, the rest would be possible. We have a big community back home that was praying and rooting for us throughout the entire tournament. I am very grateful for our extended CBU women's golf family."
Second-ranked Dallas Baptist won the tournament with a 606 (298-308), but the Lancers topped fourth-ranked Tarleton State (third, 622), No. 14 Sonoma State (sixth, 633) and 21st-ranked Academy of Art (seventh, 637).
"This comeback feels just as good as a win," Machado said. "This is definitely a teachable moment about never giving up and always staying in the moment. I know this experience will benefit us as a team when it comes to postseason play."
The Lancers had all four scorers come in at 79 or better, with three shooting 77, in the second round. Marvi Monsalve led the group, with a one-over-par 73. Fellow senior Laura Scrivner was right on her heels, with a 74, while true freshman Samantha Martirez and sophomore Erica Wang shot 77 and 79, respectively.
CBU closed out the tournament by playing its final four holes even par, which is where Coach Machado preaches tournaments are won and lost.
"That is what we set out to do," Machado said. "I want to be known as the team that always finishes off their rounds solid."
Monsalve tied for second place, just two shots off the individual lead, after using three birdies on Tuesday. Overall, she shot 151 (78-73) for the Lancers, who had Scrivner in fourth place with a 152 (78-74). Scrivner was right around par all day, using just one birdie to shoot two-over on the day.
Wang finished in a tie for ninth place in the individual standings at 154 (75-79), while Martirez took 32nd with a 161 (84-77) after improving seven strokes from round one to two. Natalie Park shot a combined 170 and cut six strokes (88-82) off her Monday round on Tuesday.
There is just one more regular-season tournament on the docket for the Lancers. They travel to Goodyear, Arizona's Palm Valley Golf Club for the Mustang Intercollegiate April 10-11 before taking on the PacWest Championships in Hawaii April 24-26.
