RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Coming off two run-rule victories just two days prior, California Baptist University kept its bats hot and defense strong to grab 7-2 and 7-0 victories over Dominican University of California Thursday night.
CBU improves to 12-7 on the year and 6-2 in the PacWest with the doubleheader sweep. The Penguins drop to 6-12, 5-5 in conference.
The Lancers threatened early, loading up the bases with one out in their first chance at the plate. Krista Mann led off with a base hit in the gap between center and right field, before tagging up on a sacrifice fly from Brittany Galvez to put CBU up 1-0.
Hannah Thieroff tacked on some insurance in the bottom of the fourth, tucking a solo home run inside the left field foul pole. CBU put two more runners on, but the Penguins managed to end the inning without conceding more runs, 2-0.
Galvez kept the scoring going in the bottom of the fifth, rounding third on Thieroff's double down the left field line, 3-0. With two outs and two runners on, Alley Johnson drove in both runners with a base hit through the right side to put CBU in front 5-0.
Dominican ended the Lancers shutout streak with two runs in the sixth, but CBU got them right back in the bottom half of the frame.
Kellye Springstead continued her dominant performance in the circle, not allowing a single hit until the top of the fifth. It marked almost 10 straight innings of Springstead not allowing a base hit. She finished the game with seven strikeouts.
In the nightcap, the Lancers struck first in the bottom of the second, despite the Penguins getting two outs early. Mann drove in Ali Subia from second with a base hit up the middle and Deanna Alarcon scored off a Caitlyn Lloyd single, 2-0.
CBU tacked on another run in the third off an Amanda Springstead sacrifice fly as Diana Gomez tagged up at third, 3-0.
The Lancers looked for another two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth after loading up the bases. Mann stepped into the batter's box and delivered with a two-RBI single to up CBU's lead to 5-0.
Lloyd doubled up the middle and made her way to third on the throw as Mann and Alarcon scored, threatening a run-rule victory with a 7-0 CBU lead.
Dominican avoided the early ending, however, but couldn't put any runs together to drop the game 7-0.
Ashley Coleman threw the complete game, allowing just three hits and striking out two Penguins.
The Lancers remain at home for one more doubleheader, hosting Academy of Art on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. CBU then heads to Hawaii for 10 games, starting March 18 at Hawai'i-Hilo.
