RIVERSIDE, Calif. — No. 20-ranked California Baptist University came out hot Monday night and grabbed two mercy rule victories over Notre Dame de Namur, 9-0 and 13-3, both in five innings.
The wins extend the Lancers' NCAA program-best win streak to 22-straight games, standing 30-7 overall, 22-2 in the PacWest. The Argonauts drop to 8-25 on the year and 8-15 in conference.
CBU didn't waste any time, scoring in the first inning to jump in front 1-0. Krista Mann struck first, touching home on a London Miller slow rolling base hit to second. The Lancers loaded the bases up, but NDNU managed to get out of the jam.
Things were just heating up as the Lancers scored six more runs in the second. With two runners on and no outs due to an NDNU error, Mann doubled off the wall at right center to drive one runner in, 2-0.
Caitlyn Lloyd (6-for-7 on the day with five runs and eight RBIs) followed with a powerful hit past the Argos' diving shortstop to score Alley Johnson from third, 3-0. Soraya Shahbazian kept the hitting train going, blasting a shot to deep right, but it was just a few inches short of a home run, forcing the sophomore to settle for a two-run double, 5-0.
Miller traded places with Shahbazian with a double to left and Deanna Alarcon capped the scoring with an RBI single through the gap between the third baseman and shortstop.
Lloyd tacked on a run in the third with a solo home run to dead center, before Erin Burkhart and Hannah Thieroff each knocked doubles over NDNU's outfielders' heads to cap the scoring at 9-0.
Kellye Springstead secured her 10th victory of the season with six strikeouts, including catching two Argonauts looking in the final inning of the opener.
In the nightcap, the Lancers scored in their very first appearance at the plate as Mann led off with a home run. Lloyd followed with an infield single and proceeded to steal second and third. Shahbazian joined her on base with a walk and the pair came home on a Burkhart base hit straight up the middle, 3-0.
Like the first game, CBU had another big second inning in the late game. With two runners on, Lloyd drilled a triple to right center to score both, 5-0. Lloyd then tagged up on a sacrifice fly, 6-0, before the Argonauts could end the inning.
There wasn't any stopping Lloyd as she drove in another run in the third with a single through the right side, 7-0.
NDNU made things interesting by scoring three runs in the fourth, but the Lancers didn't hang their heads.
CBU loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning and scored two runs on two errors. Mann walked to load the bases up again before Lloyd hit a bases-clearing triple to get the runs back, and then some. Shahbazian sent a deep double off the wall to score Lloyd, capping the score at 13-3.
Ciara Stapp, who had come in on relief, sealed the run-rule victory with a popup, strikeout and an easy grounder.
The Lancers will face the Argos again Tuesday night for another doubleheader, beginning at 5:00 p.m.
