CARSON, Calif. – While taking a break from conference action, No. 17-ranked California Baptist University didn't take a break from its hot streak, grabbing 10-2 and 10-1 (five innings) wins over Cal State Dominguez Hills with five home runs on the day.
"I thought it was a real team effort today," said Coach Bill Baber. "All four pitchers and our team hitting was very good."
The Lancers have now won 26 in a row – CBU's NCAA era program-best win streak – boasting a 34-7 overall mark. The Toros drop to 6-39 on the year.
After being held scoreless in the first two innings, CBU exploded out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the third. Deanna Alarcon got the inning going with a one-out double to center and was joined on base by Alley Johnson, who drew ball four.
Krista Mann drove both runners in with a double to left center and came home on a Caitlyn Lloyd base hit to make it 3-0. The Toros threatened to end the inning by grabbing the second out, but Soraya Shahbazian came out on top with a full count walk before London Miller blasted a home run on her second pitch of the inning, 5-0.
CSUDH got two of the runs back in the bottom half of the inning to cut the score to 5-2, but the Lancers weren't finished yet.
Hannah Thieroff knocked a solo shot over the fence at right center in the fourth and Miller drilled her second homer of the day, scoring Mann in the process, to make it 8-2.
With two runners on in the top of the seventh, Erin Burkhart powered a two-RBI double to center field to cap the scoring and give CBU a 10-2 lead.
Kellye Springstead threw five strikeouts in three innings, before Ashley Coleman came in on relief and threw two strikeouts – while not allowing a Toro run – to pick up the win.
CBU didn't waste any time in the nightcap and jumped out to a 5-0 lead in its first chance at the plate. Three-straight singles from Mann, Lloyd and Shahbazian loaded the bases, allowing Miller to sacrifice a fly ball to score Mann from third.
Brittany Galvez then sent the other two Lancers home with a double, before coming home on a sacrifice bunt from Burkhart. Ali Subia followed with a homer to dead center, putting CBU up 5-0.
The Toros prevented the shutout in the bottom of the second, cutting the margin to four runs, 5-1, but it was all the Lancers would give them.
In the top of the fourth, CBU plated four runs on five hits and one error to boast a commanding 9-1 lead. Shahbazian got things going with a base hit on the first pitch and showed her speed as she stole second, moved to third on a Miller single and then stole home, 6-1.
Back-to-back-to-back doubles from Burkhard, Subia and Amanda Springstead gave the Lancers the 9-1 lead to put pressure on the Toros to score some runs to avoid the mercy-rule victory.
Lloyd all but sealed the run-rule win in the fifth, turning on the first strike she saw and sending it sailing over the fence in right center, 10-1.
Ciara Stapp and Iveth Alvarado each tossed two strikeouts in the game to seal Stapp's 12th victory of the season.
CBU is back at home for its final six games of the regular season, hosting rival Azusa Pacific Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
