RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Familiar faces led California Baptist University to victory at the Lancer Invitational Friday evening, despite the Lancers not running everyone.
Beginning their quest for their fourth PacWest championship and second-straight NCAA Division II berth, CBU showed great depth with seven of the Lancers' fastest runners finishing in the top 10.
"It was a great start to the season today," said Coach Ben Gall. "As a whole, it was a solid performance and it was fun to see all these girls compete."
The No. 8-ranked team in NCAA Division II, and the fourth-ranked team in the West Region, dominated its home meet, finishing the 4K with 17 team points. UC San Diego, who ranks 10th in the West Region, finished second with 49 points, as Riverside Community College took third with 80 points.
Despite a hard race due to scorching heat temperatures, Emeline Delanis still believed her team put together a strong performance. Delanis led the Lancers with a time of 14 minutes and 20.9 seconds.
"I felt good because I was with my teammates," said Delanis. "The last race I ran, I was by myself and I like it when my teammates are by side."
Gall was impressed with her efforts and is excited to see what kind of confidence it gives her this season.
"I think Emeline ran great, she looked phenomenal," said Gall. " I know it's fun for her to get a win and she looked strong doing it."
Defending PacWest champion, Anett Somogyi, wasn't far behind her fellow Lancer, as she finished with a time of 14:35.3. Fruzsina Ladanyi followed Somogyi, putting together a strong run as well, with a time of 14:38.4, while Katie Deimling took fifth with her time of 14:53.5.
"I'm proud of the whole team, we did a good job," said Somogyi. "I was super tired, it was hot, but we all pushed through it."
Leanda du Bruyn (15:02.3), Tori Dutchover (15:10.0) and Kate Robinson (15:16.8) came pouring in to fill in spots six through eight for CBU. Micaela Pulliam clocked in at 15:39.0, followed by Alicia Williams, who finished in 15:54.5.
Kim Rabenstein crossed the finish line in 16:14.1, followed by Berenice Cleyet-Merle in 16:33.0. Morgan Spurlock rounded out the Lancers at 16:38.8.
The Lancers will take three weeks to prepare for their next race, as they head to the San Francisco State Invitational on Sep. 22., for a 3:30 p.m. start time.
