DAVIS, Calif. – California Baptist University split a pair of games at UC Davis' Aggie Roundup, with a 15-9 win over MIT and 19-7 loss to fifth-ranked University of the Pacific on Friday.
Jonny Lotero scored eight times on the day, with a hat trick in both games and five goals against MIT. Tanner Shore finished with four goals on Friday, with a hat trick in the day's finale. Gabe Thorne started both games in the cage and logged 16 saves in six quarters for CBU.
The 15th-ranked Lancers move to 6-3 on the year, while Pacific improves to 5-1 and MIT drops to 3-4. CBU plays one more game at the Aggie Roundup, facing second-ranked USC at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
After falling to the Tigers, which included an 11-save performance from Thorne, CBU found itself down to MIT, 3-1, in the first quarter.
"It was a little slow start, we were a little tired from the first game and it was their first game of the evening," Coach Kevin Rosa said.
The Lancers overcame the early deficit, as it scored five of the next six goals. Five different players contributed to the run to make it a 6-4 CBU lead three minutes into the second quarter.
MIT cut into the run momentarily before Lotero scored twice in 16 seconds, while Shore scored his second goal of the day to give the Lancers a 9-6 lead at halftime. The third quarter started an 8-1 CBU charge over a seven minute, 54 second span, with three more goals from Lotero in there, and made it a comfortable 15-8 lead with 5:53 to play.
"We settled in well, played some better defense, got some good offensive possessions and counter attacks," Rosa said. "Overall, it was a good effort, we had good energy and played better throughout the game."
