RIVERSIDE, Calif. — California Baptist University grabbed a 1-0 win over Hawai'i Pacific Saturday afternoon, with a rocket of a shot from distance coming as the game-winner.
The Lancers improve to 4-3-0 overall, 2-0-0 in the PacWest. The Sharks drop to 4-3-0 on the year and 0-2-0 in conference.
Sara Escobedo had three saves in the game to maintain her second shutout of the year.
Haley Wheelon was the lone goal scorer for the Lancers, finding the back of the net in the ninth minute of the game. Hoku Afong won a bad clearance from the Sharks, laid it off to Wheelon, who fired off a shot from 40 yards out up and over the Shark goalkeeper's head.
The Lancers, who outshot HPU 27-to-9, had multiple chances for more goals, but came up unlucky. Wheelon had an opportunity in the fourth minute from close range, but hit the post.
Jordan Dow had another close look in the 55th minute, but it ricocheted off the crossbar and out instead of in.
Brooke Ligtenberg looked like she might put some insurance on the board for the Lancers with just over 25 minutes left in the game after Afong put her in behind the Shark defense, but her one-touch shot was just a little too high.
With three minutes left on the clock, CBU kept possession and held the Sharks off to grab the 1-0 win.
The Lancers get a little time to recover, heading to Dixie State next week for a 3:30 p.m. Pacific kick off in St. George, Utah.
