LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Freshmen John Hayes, Harrison Kingsley and senior Ben Hallam led California Baptist University on day one of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate.
All three Lancers stand in the top-18 individually in a field of 75 golfers. CBU ended round two of the 54-hole tournament in sixth place with a 597 (294-303) at the NM State Golf Course.
The Lancers are just 13 shots off second place, with host NM State leading the way with a 12-over 580. Oral Roberts is in second (584), while UTEP (585), The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (587) and Western New Mexico (588) make up the rest of the top five.
CBU does lead some impressive teams in the 11-team field, including Incarnate Word (seventh, 600); Wichita State (eighth, 604), which won the Marshall Invitational earlier this year; Western Illinois (tied for 10th, 615), which took third in the Summit League in 2018, and Houston Baptist (tied for 10th, 615).
The Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate also gives CBU a sneak peek at two Western Athletic Conference foes, NM State and UTRGV. The Aggies finished fourth in the WAC last year, while the Vaqueros have placed fifth the last two seasons. The Lancers will look to overtake both in Tuesday's third and final round. The final 18 holes of the tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m., with live stats available on Golfstat.
Hayes recorded his first par-or-better round to open Monday, as his even-par 71 put him in fifth place at the end of round one. The true freshman birdied five times over his first 18 holes and played his final five holes one-under. He finished the day with a 76, with the help of three birdies, to put himself in a 10th-place tie with a total of 147 (71-76).
Hallam finished round one at one-over 72, which included a trio of birdies, as he played his final four holes one-under. He birdied three more times and was one-under over his final four holes to card a 76 in round two. The 148 has Hallam tied with Kingsley for 18th.
Kingsley put up identical rounds of 74 on Monday and moved six spots up the leaderboard, from round one to two, as a result. He was right around par through his first 18, using just one birdie for his first 74. He got out to a great start in round two, playing his first 11 holes three-under par.
Brothers Ryan and Ivan Monsalve battled it out for CBU's fourth and final scoring spot each round. Ryan Monsalve got the first by shooting 77 in the first round, and Ivan got the second after shooting 77 in the second round. Both Ivan (78-77) and Ryan (77-78) are tied for 57th with 155s going into Tuesday.
