LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Three California Baptist University golfers shot 75 or better on Tuesday to keep their team in sixth place in the third and final round of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate.
Ben Hallam and Ivan Monsalve both carded team-best, two-over par 73s at the NM State Golf Course to lead the Lancers, while John Hayes turned in a 75. Those three helped CBU shoot 298 on the day for an 895 total (294-303-298) on the week.
The Lancers were just five shots off a top-four spot, with NM State winning its host tournament with an 873. UTEP took second with an 878, while Oral Roberts finished third (879). Western New Mexico and The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley tied for fourth with 890s.
Hallam and Hayes finished in the top-20 of the 75-golfer field. Hallam shot 221 (72-76-73) to place 13th and Hayes logged a 222 (71-76-75) for 16th place.
Harrison Kingsley took 39th with a 227 (74-74-79), while Ivan Monsalve was in 43rd with a 228 (78-77-73) and Ryan Monsalve placed 59th with a 232 (77-78-77).
CBU not only got a good early look at Western Athletic Conference opponents NM State and UTRGV, but knocked off some impressive teams in the field, including Incarnate Word (seventh, 902); Wichita State (ninth, 911), which won the Marshall Invitational earlier this year; Houston Baptist (10th, 914) and Western Illinois (11th, 926), which took third in the Summit League in 2018.Â
The Lancers close out their fall season at Pacific's Visit Stockton Invitational Thursday, Oct. 25 through Saturday, Oct. 27.
