STOCKTON, Calif. – A senior and freshman led California Baptist University on day one of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invite, which is perhaps the Lancers' most challenging tournament of the season, on Thursday.
Ben Hallam, the senior, and Justin Cross, the true freshman, both shot two-under-par 69 to sit in a 15th-place tie with two rounds to play. CBU shot just three-over 287 overall as a team to stand in 13th place but only nine shots off a top-three position. The Lancers will tee off starting at 8:45 a.m. on Friday, with live stats available at Golfstat.Â
The Lancers are going up against perhaps the deepest field they have seen so far, with five NCAA Regional teams from last season in attendance. There are also three top-five teams from the West Coast Conference (WCC), three top-four teams out of the Big West Conference and two top-four squads out of the Mountain West Conference in the 16-team field.
John Hayes and Jack Solis completed CBU's team score with a 74 and 75, respectively, while Ryan Monsalve was one shot off at 76.
Hallam birdied five times and played his final eight holes three-under par to shoot 69 on Thursday. Cross utilized four birdies and played his final 10 holes one-under to finish the day two-under par. Â
San Jose State currently leads the tournament with a 271. Second place belongs to 16th-ranked Brigham Young (275), which took 24th at the NCAA Championships last year and won the West Coast Conference in 2017. Another regional team from 2018, San Francisco, stands in third (278).
St. Mary's, a regional qualifier the last four years and runner-up in the WCC last season, stands in fourth (280), while 40th-ranked Nevada and Long Beach State are tied for fifth with 281s.
CBU does hold leads over CSUN (14th, 288), UC Riverside (15th, 293) and Fresno State (16th, 300) and is just one stroke off 11th-place teams Grand Canyon and UC Irvine (286). The Anteaters are the defending Big West champions, while the Lopes are the runner-ups out of the WAC.
