RIVERSIDE, Calif. — In its final game of its first-ever NCAA Division I season, California Baptist University looked to close out the successful season with a bang and grabbed a 2-1 victory over the University of Montana Friday afternoon on Senior Day.
The Lancers finish the year with a 12-5-1 overall mark, while the Grizzlies drop to 4-8-6 on the year. It marks the third-straight 10-plus win season and the most victories CBU has posted since 2013 – its first year of eligibility in the NCAA.
"Today was bittersweet," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "Our senior class, as they have done so many times, stepped up and set the tone immediately. This was a complete team effort, strong performances across the board, creating dangerous scoring opportunities in the run of play and in transition and a great defensive presence. We wanted to honor our senior class, they have done a tremendous job leading on and off the field and being positive members of the CBU community. I'm proud of the entire team not only for their performance today but the entire season, as we wrap up an incredibly successful inaugural NCAA Division I season at 12-5-1."
Less than 10 minutes into the game, Rebecca Romero finished a beautiful goal from 35 yards out, placing it perfectly into the upper part of the farpost to put CBU up 1-0.
Fresh off the bench, senior Miranda Martinez upped the lead to 2-0 in the 21st minute. Jordan Dow collected a blocked shot and sent a byline pass to the top of the six-yard box. Martinez beat her defender to the nearpost and flicked the cross with the outside of her foot past the goalkeeper to double CBU's lead.
"Today's game was great, the energy was amazing and everyone worked so hard for each other," said Martinez. "To honor and play with the seniors one last time was something I'll never forget. I'm so glad I was able to get a goal in today and make one last impact on this team before I leave."
It put the Lancers into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
CBU kept pressing in the second half and looked like it might get a third just three minutes into the frame. Erin Gallagher fired off a shot from 20 yards out, forcing the Montana goalkeeper to get her fingertips on it and send it wide.
The Grizzlies cut the upper hand to just one goal in the 86th minute, but the Lancers closed out the remaining four minutes to secure the 2-1 victory.
Prior to kickoff, eight seniors were recognized for their contributions to the CBU women's soccer program: Carissa Christensen, Christen Engel, Brooke Ligtenberg, Sydney Rockett, Kyler Clark, Lanai Navarro, Miranda Martinez and Desarae Felix.
