STOCKTON, Calif. – Everything clicked for California Baptist University in the third and final round of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invite on Saturday.
The Lancers jumped seven spots up the leaderboard and into a ninth-place tie at the Stockton Country Club after they shot four-under-par 280 to complete an 861 total (287-294-280). The 861 is the sixth lowest 54-hole team score in CBU history, while the 280 is tied for the ninth lowest single-round team score for the program.
All four CBU scorers shot 73 or better on Saturday, with three coming in under par. Ben Hallam led the Lancers with a four-under-par 67, while Justin Cross and John Hayes finished up one-under 70. Jack Solis completed the scoring with a 73, while Ryan Monsalve gave CBU a drop score of 76.
It ended the most challenging tournament the Lancers have played in this fall season, if not ever. CBU was up against five NCAA Regional teams from last season. There were also three top-five teams from the West Coast Conference (WCC), three top-four teams out of the Big West Conference and two top-four squads out of the Mountain West Conference in the field.
CBU's fall season has officially come to an end. The Lancers will take their winter break and return for their next tournament at the Farms Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of San Diego, on Feb. 11-12.Â
Nevada, the 40th-ranked team in the NCAA, won the event with an 814, while 16th-ranked Brigham Young took second (826). San Francisco, a regional qualifier from last year, took third (828). The Lancers did pick up head-to-head victories over several quality teams, including UC Riverside (11th, 862); Grand Canyon, the runner-up in the Western Athletic Conference last year (12th, 863); UC Irvine (13th, 865), CSUN (15th, 869) and Fresno State (16th, 871).
Hallam accumulated six birdies on the day and play his final five holes three-under par. The 67 is tied for the 12th lowest round in CBU history. It also completed a 208 (73-68-67) for the senior, which is the seventh lowest in Lancer lore and was also good for 14th place in the tournament.
Cross and Hayes both collected four birdies on Saturday. Cross played his final 10 holes one-under par, while Hayes was two-under over his first seven holes. Cross tied for a 21st-place finish in the tournament with a 211 (69-72-70), while Hayes took 65th with a 221 (74-77-70).
Solis took 74th with a 223 (75-75-73) and Monsalve took 80th with a 226 (76-74-76).
