SEATTLE – In the first conference title race of the NCAA DI era, California Baptist University picked up where it left off in Division II, winning the Western Athletic Conference Championship and seeing four runners grab All-WAC honors.
"This women's group has gained invaluable experience in a short amount of time," said Coach Adam Tribble. "They've adjusted and pivoted with countless changes from the summer until now. I'm so happy for them!"
Anett Somogyi won the individual 6K crown, with three Lancers placing in the top-five. CBU topped the podium with all five scorers finishing in the top-16 to post a team total of 33 points (first, third, fifth, eighth, 16th) and secure a fifth consecutive conference title. The Lancers beat out Utah Valley (second, 61 points), Kansas City (third, 89 points), defending WAC Champion NM State (fourth, 95 points), and The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (fifth, 120 points).
To top off an exciting day and an exciting season, CBU swept the conference awards. Somogyi was named the WAC Athlete of the Year, Karolina Iznerowicz was named the WAC Freshman of the Year, and Tribble was named the WAC Coach of the Year.
"[These awards are] just a tribute to the work and sacrifice these ladies have put in over the course of the season," said Tribble. "This is not the end, it's the beginning."
Â
On a foggy morning at the Jefferson Park Golf Course, Somogyi emerged victorious in the 70-runner field with a time of 20 minutes, 52.0 seconds. She was behind going into the final 1K, but put in a kick to get past the defending champion and to secure her second individual conference title as a Lancer.
Iznerowicz recorded a personal-best time to take third in 20:57.4, while Fruzsi Ladanyi also set a new personal best with a time of 21:00.0 to take fifth place. The pair, along with Somogyi, grabbed All-WAC first team honors with their finishes.
Anna Mate just missed out on first-team distinction, finishing eighth with a 21:02.10 time, but grabbed second-team honors. Emilie Renaud (21:31.2) rounded out the CBU scoring five with a 16th-place finish. Lara Orrock (21:32.7) and Maria Guerrero (21:39.2) were the next two runners to cross the finish line, claiming 17th and 18th respectively. Chloe Sharp finished up the morning for CBU with a time of 22:12.3, good for a 36th-place finish.
While Orrock, Guerrero and Sharp didn't score for the Lancers, they played an important role in displacing runners from other teams to create some separation in the team scores.
