RIVERSIDE, Calif. – California Baptist University's first NCAA Division I season will continue after the Lancers learned they were selected as one of 32 teams for the 2018 National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) on Sunday night.
The NIVC is an annual, single-elimination tournament involving 32 to 40 of the nation's top women's Division I volleyball teams. The Lancers are the first team in CBU history to qualify for a national postseason tournament in the Division I era.
"We are so excited to get a bid to the NIVC," Coach Branden Higa said. "Playing the postseason is something that we set our sights on every year and to be able to do that in year one is a testament to the women on this team and to the support we have from our university, students and fans."
This year's NIVC tournament includes a number of impressive institutions, including Clemson, UNLV, Georgia Tech, Ball State, St. John's, Wyoming, UC Irvine, Fresno State, UC Santa Barbara and Portland.
The Lancers are headed to Tulane, which is one of teams hosting the first two NIVC regional rounds. CBU will open the tournament with a match against Arkansas Little Rock on Thursday at 3 p.m. Pacific. The winner will go on to face the victor of Tulane and Arkansas State's first-round match on Friday at 5 p.m.
CBU ended the regular season with a 20-10 record and took fourth in its first year in the Western Athletic Conference with a 9-7 run through the league. Tulane went 19-12 in the regular season and 10-6 in the Sun Belt Conference for a runner-up finish in the conference's West Division.
