RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Defense led seamlessly into offense for California Baptist University on Saturday, as the Lancers defeated Notre Dame de Namur 80-47 in the CBU Events Center for their fourth-straight win on Saturday.
CBU forced 21 turnovers, posted a 43-35 advantage in rebounds and shot 47.6 from the field (30-63) to route the Argonauts, a former PacWest opponent. All 10 Lancers who played scored at least three points, while seven had at least seven points, thanks in large part to an opportunistic defense.
"It felt like they were taking the shot clock down almost every time, so we were playing aggressive and pressing to score," Coach Jarrod Olson said. "We did some half-court trapping, which is new for us, but that was just to get the pace going."
A giant second quarter helped Georgia Dale score a game-high 17 points, while also pulling down six rebounds, forcing five steals and assisting on two other field goals in less than 20 minutes of play.
"Dale is just a force of nature, she plays with a lot of energy and just makes things happen every time she's out there," Olson said. "Today, her decision making was really good. She's on a really good run right now."
Sharing the ball was a huge key for CBU's success and balanced offense, as it logged 17 assists in the victory. Ane Olaeta followed with 11 points and four assists for CBU, while Lexy Ram and Delacy Brown chipped in nine points each. Ram added eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks to her tally.
"We have been emphasizing moving the ball and letting it find the shooter and that has helped our offense," Olson said.
Brown led a strong first quarter that put CBU ahead 20-8 after the first 10 minutes on Saturday. She scored seven points on 3-for-4 shooting, while the Lancers shot 57.1 percent (8-14) as a team in the first quarter.
Dale took over the second quarter by scoring 12 points over those 10 minutes. The sophomore sparked a 16-4 run that put CBU ahead 42-23 at halftime. She went into the break with a game-high 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting.
"Georgia had great energy in the first and really got us going," Olson said. "She was just pressing the lanes and really got a spark going for us, everyone just followed her along."
The Lancers increased their lead to 26, 61-35, in the third quarter. Ram scored a team-high six points in the frame, while Maryn Budiman and Britney Thomas (three blocks) had four each. Olaeta and Caitlyn Harper both scored eight points in the fourth quarter, as CBU finished the game strong.
CBU's winning streak brings its record to 5-6 this season, while Notre Dame de Namur is 2-5 after it used Saturday as an exhibition. The Lancers resume play against NCAA Division I competition next week when they travel to UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip.
