RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A monster double-double from Britney Thomas and dominant fourth quarter helped California Baptist University defeat UC Riverside for the first time since 1987.
CBU earned a hard-fought 65-57 victory over the Highlanders in the CBU Events Center, with Thursday night's "Crosstown Showdown" being the first countable game between the Lancers and Highlanders since 2001. Thomas, a junior forward, scored a game-high 21 points and also set career-highs for herself with 20 rebounds and four blocks in 31 minutes.
"We have been talking about being resilient and sticking with it, and tonight was a good example," Coach Jarrod Olson said. "It wasn't perfect or a clean game really, but we made some hustle and toughness plays in the end that I think that was the difference in the game."
Thomas tied for the second-most rebounds in an NCAA-era game at CBU. It was just the third time a Lancer had 20 or more rebounds in a game in that span, and a first since 2015. Her four blocks were just two off the NCAA-era record for a single game.
Delacy Brown and Emma Meriggioli both scored in double figures for the Lancers, too. Brown had 16 points, while Meriggioli added 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting from three, five assists and four rebounds. Georgia Dale made a big impact, as well, with seven points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.
CBU enjoyed a 54-48 advantage in rebounds and hit nine three-pointers in the game, while holding UC Riverside to just two.
"We had a ton of defensive rebounds in the second half, some of our guards were chipping in," Olson said. "I thought it was a pretty good team effort, but Thomas was amazing on the glass in the second half."
It all came down to the fourth quarter on Thursday, with CBU taking a one-possession lead (51-48) into the final 10 minutes. The Lancers wound up winning the fourth quarter on a margin of 14-9 after starting it on a 13-4 run.
Thomas scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to put CBU up by eight, 56-48, with 8:29 to play. UC Riverside stopped the run momentarily, but three-pointers within 68 seconds of each other from Olaeta and Brown helped CBU take their largest lead of the night, up 64-52, with 2:18 left in regulation.
The game started much like the fourth quarter, with CBU opening it up on an 8-2 run, thanks to six points in the first four-and-a-half minutes from Thomas. UC Riverside managed to cut its deficit down to one, 16-15, at the end of the first quarter.
The Lancers increased their lead to three, 35-32, by halftime after knocking down four three-pointers in the second quarter. Three of them came in 64 seconds. Brown hit the first triple with 3:24 left in the first half to give CBU a 28-26 edge. Meriggioli then connected on back-to-back shots from deep to make it 34-30 for the home team.
Thomas finished the first half with 14 points on 7-for-11 shooting, six rebounds, a block and steal. CBU then started the second half on an 8-2 run to take what was then its largest lead of the night, up nine (43-34), with Brown, Tiena Afu and Meriggioli all contributing.
Back-to-back wins improve CBU to 3-6 this season, while UC Riverside falls to 2-6. The Lancers wrap up their four-game homestand with a pair of games versus former PacWest foes Fresno Pacific and Notre Dame de Namur. The Sunbirds visit on Saturday at 1 p.m., with the Argonauts dropping in at the same time exactly a week later (Dec. 15).
