SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — California Baptist University had already secured a PacWest Tournament berth, but it wasn't time to let up in one of the last games of the regular season. The Lancers grabbed a 94-68 victory over Dominican University of California Thursday night, outscoring the Penguins 25-to-6 in the fourth quarter.
The Lancers improve to 16-11 overall, 13-6 in the PacWest with their eighth-straight win. The Penguins drop to 17-10, 11-8 in conference.
"We didn't play very good defense in the first half, so we knew we had to come out in the second half and really lock in," said senior Emily Schmidt. "The guards did a great job in the second half of helping us posts contain their two bigs."
Five Lancers finished the night in double figures, with two posting double-doubles on the night. Georgia Dale led with 19 points (8-for-17) and dished out four assists in the victory. Blaysen Varnadoe finished with 18 points (7-for-14), 12 rebounds and a career-high five assists. Ane Olaeta contributed 16 points, while Tori Mitchell (6-for-11) chipped in 13 points and 11 boards in just 15 minutes of action. Emma Meriggioli rounded out the quintet with 12 points, knocking down four triples.
Schmidt helped the Lancers out-rebound the Penguin 57-to-44 with a career-high 12 boards, also chipping in five points.
CBU opened the game on a 10-2 run to jump out in front early. Mitchell scored the first points of the night, with Olaeta and Dale also getting in on the action.
The Penguins cut the margin to five points, 13-8, with under four minutes left in the period, but back-to-back three-pointers from Meriggioli and Dale gave the Lancers their first double-digit lead of the night, 19-8.
After CBU posted a 22-14 lead heading into the second, Dominican came back in the period to pull within one, 28-27, with under six minutes left in the frame. Dale kept the Penguins from grabbing too much momentum, banking in a tough shot from the right side, 30-27.
Dominican tied the game up 33-33, but Dale found Meriggioli score on the perimeter on consecutive occasions to put the Lancers back in front by multiple possessions, 39-33. CBU carried that momentum the rest of the quarter, going into halftime with a 46-39 cushion.
Once again, the Penguins came battling back and cut the margin to just two, 60-58. Schmidt hit a last-second jumper to send CBU into the final quarter with some momentum, up 69-62.
It sparked 13 unanswered points for the Lancers to start the fourth, giving CBU a 20-point cushion, 82-62. Olaeta drained back-to-back treys in the spurt, with Schmidt and Mitchell also scoring in the run.
The Lancer defense came up big off the glass during the run, preventing Dominican from getting second looks at the basket and not allowing a point for almost six full minutes of the quarter.
With three minutes left to play, CBU called a quick timeout and came out with a Varnadoe layup to increase its upper hand to 20 points, 86-66.
The Lancers closed out the final minutes of the game strong, sealing the 94-68 victory by outscoring the Penguins 25-to-6 in the fourth.
