VISTA, Calif. – A low round from Ben Hallam helped California Baptist University secured its best finish of the season at Cal State San Marcos' Fujikura Invitational on Tuesday at the Shadowridge Country Club.
The Lancers carded a 297 for the second round in a row, with Hallam shooting a four-under-par 68 to lead his team to a top-four finish with an 889 (295-297-297). CBU takes a month break before its next event at Cal State East Bay's Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout at Vallejo's Hiddenbrooke Golf Course on March 5-6.
On Tuesday, the Cougars won their event with an 875. Eighteenth-ranked Chico State (876) and No. 17 Cal State Monterey Bay (886) were the only other teams to finish in front of CBU, which tied with Stanislaus State for fourth.
Hallam's 68 came after he bogeyed just twice on Tuesday. The junior birdied two of his first four holes and even went one-under on back-to-back holes at 14 and 15 before sinking an eagle at 17. It catapulted him 24 spots up the leaderboard to a ninth-place standing.
Ryan Monsalve achieved the best individual finish of any Lancer by taking seventh with a 219 (71-72-76). While it was his highest score of the tournament, Monsalve limited the damage with a pair of birdies.
Greg Gonzalez tied Monsalve for the second-best score of round three for CBU, with a 76, which came off of two birdies. The senior completed a 227 (78-73-76) on the week to take 23rd in the 80-player field.
Four Lancers placed in the top-30 individually speaking, as Matt Harris took 30th with a 228 (71-77-80) on Tuesday. It was Ivan Monsalve who served as CBU's fourth scorer in the third round, though, with a 77 completing a 232 (80-75-77).
