JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. – Coming into the third and final round of the Joust at Goose Creek, California Baptist University was looking forward to a battle with two top-16 ranked NCAA Division II teams.
The Lancers got just that but stood strong and improved on their six-stroke lead from Monday over the final 18 holes on Tuesday to win their home event at the Goose Creek Golf Club by eight shots with a 10-over-par 850 total. CBU posted the lowest team score in all three rounds of the tournament with a 281-281-288.
It remained a two-team race for the title in round three, as 16th-ranked Chico State took second with an 858. The next closest team, Simon Fraser, was 12 strokes back (870) and No. 9 Colorado-Colorado Springs ended up fourth (872).
"This win gives us some confidence heading down the stretch," Coach TL Brown said. "This win will help our regional ranking. For us to beat all those solid and nationally-ranked teams, it helps us breathe a little easier but we have to keep working hard."
After strong starts over the first 36 holes, Ben Hallam and Greg Gonzalez finished second and third individually on Tuesday. All four CBU scorers broke 73 on a challenging third round with tough pin locations, hard greens and some wind.
"We knew the course was going to be set up very difficult today," Hallam said. "We were focused on putting the ball on the right parts of the course. We knew it was going to be a tough day overall, so we had to grind out the victory.
"It's always a fantastic feeling being in contention; there's no thrill like it, especially when it's your home tournament. There's a lot of pride in winning your home tournament."
Matt Harris posted the lowest third-round score for the Lancers with a 70, while Hallam shot 72 and Ryan Monsalve and Gonzalez both carded 73s.
"We needed everybody to show up this week," Brown said of the key to the victory. "This week, all five guys helped us win this championship and I am just really proud of them."
Home-course advantage proved vital for the Lancers on such a challenging third round. Brown was not upset the course proved more difficult for the field on Tuesday, knowing his team was up to the task.
"The pin positions were extremely difficult but we were hitting to these spots week in advance," Brown said. "I wanted the course to play hard and fast because the firmness of the greens were really to our advantage. Those preparations were key to our win."
Hallam finished three-under-par 207 overall (67-68-72) after he shot two-over 72 on Tuesday to take runner-up. Gonzalez was one shot off Hallam with a 208 (65-70-73) after shooting 73 on Tuesday.
"The key for my game this week was to limit the amount of mistakes I made," Hallam said. "I knew I had to be patient because it's very easy to drop shots on this golf course with the severity of the greens. I didn't want to get too aggressive."
Ryan Monsalve was consistent from start to finish for the Lancers to shoot 219 (74-72-73) and take 23rd overall. Harris improved by five strokes from round one to three to tie for the third best individual round on Tuesday. It shot Harris 33 spots up the individual leaderboard to 35th.
Ivan Monsalve took 47th in the 104-player field with a 224 (75-71-78), while Jack Solis shot 235 (78-76-81) as an individual.
"There was a lot of individual performances I was really proud of," Brown said. "The guys all understood they were playing for four other guys."
