Harris Takes Second at National Preview

RESULTS
MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – Matt Harris put together one of the best rounds in the field once again for California Baptist University at the Division II National Preview on Tuesday.
Harris shot under par for the second round in a row to take second place individually and lead the 26th-ranked Lancer to seventh place as a team in a tournament filled with four top-20 ranked squads. CBU totaled a 901 (309-290-302) after it carded a 14-over-par 302 in Tuesday's third and final round at The Shoals Golf Club.
Eighth-ranked Limestone College won the tournament by four strokes with an 882 total, while No. 3 Newberry College took second (886), St. Mary's of Texas took third (890) and Queens University of Charlotte took fourth (891). The Lancers finished just three shots off a top-five finish and No. 11 Colorado-Colorado Springs (898).
All four Lancer scorers logged 78s or better on Tuesday, with Harris and Greg Gonzalez leading the way with a 71 and 75, respectively. Harris sank five birdies and really finished strong, with four birdies on his last seven holes to play them a combined three-under par.
Overall, Harris finished in a three-way tie for second place with a one-over-par 217 (76-70-71). Emilio Gonzales of St. Mary's (Texas), who is the 36th-ranked individual in all of Division II, earned medalist honors with a 215 (71-72-72).
Harris, a mid-season addition for the Lancers, put himself up there with top competition. He tied with the No. 17 ranked golfer in D-II, Newberry's Spencer Skiff, for second place and placed higher than the five top-22 ranked individuals and four from the top 16.
Gonzalez, who is ranked 67th, ended the tournament strong, as well, with two birdies in his round. The senior also played his final nine holes even par after starting his round with three-straight bogeys to take 33rd individually with a 228 (77-76-75).
Ben Hallam and Ryan Monsalve both scored for CBU with 78s on Tuesday. Hallam birdied four times in his final round for a 227 total (78-71-78) and 28th, while Monsalve compiled a 234 (83-73-78) to come in 59th.
Dan Heron just missed out on scoring for CBU for the second time this week with a 79 on Tuesday. His 235 (78-78-79) total placed him 63rd.
The Lancers continue a busy final stretch when they head to the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational next Monday and Tuesday at the Turlock Golf and Country Club. CBU then ends its regular season at the UC Santa Barbara Sandpiper Classic April 16-17 before the PacWest Championships April 23-25 in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
