PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – All season long, California Baptist University has been a strong second-round team and the 20th-ranked Lancers were making a push from sixth to third heading into their final three holes of the Otter Invite on Tuesday.
Their comeback was quite literally erased at the Poppy Hills Golf Course, though, as the second round was canceled late Tuesday afternoon. It was due to unplayable course conditions caused by steady light rain throughout the day.
It was disappointing for the surging Lancers. A few teams had finished their second round and everyone had made it through 12 holes, but since the teams did not all start on the same hole, none of the scores from the round counted.
It crowned third-ranked Dallas Baptist of NCAA Division II the tournament champions with a seven-over-par 291, while No. 9 Flagler (299) and Academy of Art (301) round out the top three. Host Cal State Monterey Bay took fourth place (304) and eighth-ranked Tarleton State finished fifth (305).
CBU shot 306 in Monday's first round to finish in sixth place in the 20-team tournament. The Lancers defeat two Division I opponents in the field: Yale (seventh, 310) and Dartmouth (tied for eighth, 312) and No. 10 St. Mary's of Texas (13th, 315), 15th-ranked Missouri-St. Louis (tied for 15th, 318) and No. 23 Central Oklahoma (tied for eighth, 312) in the event.
Four CBU golfers, including an individual, carded 76s or better, while all scorers broke 80 for the Lancers. Dallas Baptist's Hanna Harrison won the 114-player leaderboard after shooting three-under 68.
Jocelyn Chee Yi Min, who competed as an individual so her score was not countable toward the team total, tied for third place with a one-over par 72. Yi Min birdied four times, including three times on the back nine to play her final four holes even par and last nine one-under.
Three Lancers: Sharon Oh, Yifei "Sunny" Wang and Samantha Martirez shot 76 on Monday, while Kristyna Abrahamova rounded out the four scorers with a 78. Erica Wang also carded an 81 in round one for CBU.
