RIVERSIDE, Calif. – For the third season in a row, California Baptist University is bound for the NCAA Division II postseason as the fifth seed in the West Region announced on Friday.
The Lancers will look to defend their 2017 West/South Central Regional title May 7-9 at the Tascosa Golf Club in Amarillo, Texas. The top three teams in the regional tournament are assured a trip to the Division II Championships May 21-25 at the Fighting Joe Golf Course in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
Overall, CBU is ranked 29th in Division II and fifth in the West Region. Fourteenth-ranked Chico State occupies the No. 1 spot in the West Region, while No. 16 Cal State Monterey Bay, No. 25 Dixie State and Sonoma State round out the top five. Simon Fraser, Dominican, Western Washington, Holy Names and Cal State San Marcos fill in from sixth to 10th.
The South Central teams in attendance will be 12th-ranked Colorado-Colorado Springs, No. 22 St. Mary's, No. 21 Texas A&M Commerce, Arkansas Fort Smith, Oklahoma Christian, Colorado School of Mines, Colorado Christian, Colorado State Pueblo, Midwestern State and Rogers State.
CBU has been a top contender in Division II over the last two years. It took fourth in the region and advanced all the way to match play in 2016 and then took 10th in D-II after winning the region crown last season.
Senior Greg Gonzalez is the one constant from the last two years in CBU's lineup, but the Lancers have enough talent to make one last run for glory in Division II. They are coming off a fourth-place finish at the PacWest Championships. The Lancers have won two events as a team and have six top-five finishes. They are currently averaging a 296.85 a round as a team, which is the third-best average in program history, and has four par-or-better rounds, including two this week at the PacWest Tournament.
Gonzalez and Ben Hallam are the two golfers who have started all 11 tournaments this year for CBU. Hallam leads the way with a 73.70 scoring average, 11 par-or-better rounds and six rounds in the 60s. Gonzalez has averaged a 74.24 and has seven par-or-better rounds, with four in the 60s.
Ryan Monsalve has started in 10 of 11 tournaments as a true freshman and has averaged a 75.23. He logged his best finish of the year when he took third at the PacWest Championships for All-Tournament honors.
Matt Harris and Dan Heron will likely earn the Lancers' final two starting spots this postseason after making the lineup for the PacWest Championships. Heron has averaged a 76.36 in eight tournaments and Harris has played in six tournaments since joining CBU after the mid-season hiatus and has averaged a 75.33 with seven par-or-better rounds out of a total of 18.
