CBU Shows No Rust Versus Knights

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Going into its off week, California Baptist University was playing its best baseball of the season. The layoff didn't seem to negatively impact that for the 19th-ranked Lancers, who returned to action in their final home series of the year with Academy of Art on Tuesday.
CBU opened its PacWest set with the Urban Knights with an 8-3 win at Totman Stadium after it scored four runs in the first inning. The Lancers improve to 29-14, 22-11 in the conference and ART U slides to 24-22, 19-18. The series continues with a 4 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday.
Nine Lancer seniors: Tommy Bell, Andrew Bernstein, Dylan Stowell, Brody Robinson, DJ Porter, Ryan Williams, Bryce Macy, Morgan Earman and Angel Delgado will be honored on their Senior Day between both games of Wednesday's doubleheader.
Luke Navigato and Porter did some damage for the Lancers at the No. 1 and 2 spots in their batting order. Navigato was 2-for-5 with two runs and two stolen bases in the leadoff spot, and Porter went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, a double and run scored. Angelo Capolupo also helped turn the lineup over in the nine spot by going 2-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base.
It helped CBU get out to a quick start, with a four spot in the first inning. Navigato, Porter and Andrew Bash started the inning off with singles, with Navigato coming home on Porter's hit. Ryan Mota then hit a three-run homer to left center to make it 4-0 going into the second inning.
The Lancers added another run in the second inning. Capolupo started the inning with a single and then scored on a Porter double to make it 5-0. With how Stowell has been pitching lately, that was all he was going to need.
Stowell threw 7.1 innings in which he allowed nine hits, two runs and a walk, while striking out seven. The bullpen continued to impress for CBU, too. Ryan Silva finished off the eighth inning and then Chris Burica, a redshirt freshman, made his home debut in the ninth. Burica, a transfer from Creighton University, certainly impressed and struck out three batters to overcome an error in the inning.
When the Urban Knights got in the board in the seventh inning, the Lancers got that run back and then another in the bottom half. Walks to Capolupo and a Navigato single started the inning and then a pair of double steal attempts and an error scored two runs.
The Urban Knights looked to make it interesting, with a run in the eighth, but CBU separated itself again. Williams led off the eighth with a double to left and then took third on a wild pitch. John Glenn drove in Williams with a single to left field to cap the scoring.
