ST. GEORGE, Utah – A back-and-forth PacWest series opener ended up in Dixie State's favor on Tuesday night at Bruce Hurst Field, with California Baptist University losing on a walk-off, 8-7.
There were three ties and lead changes in the game, with the Trailblazers scoring the final three runs of the game for the narrow victory. CBU moves to 32-15, 25-12 in conference and Dixie State improves to 23-24, 19-18. The series continues with a 3 p.m. PDT game on Wednesday and ends with an 11 a.m. doubleheader on Thursday.
Tommy Bell stretched his hitting streak to 14 games by going 3-for-5 with a run scored in the loss for the Lancers, who received a 2-for-3 game that included two runs batted in, two runs scored and a homer.
CBU continued to start hot and took a 1-0 lead with a small two-out rally. It started on an error and consecutive singles from Tommy Bell and Ryan Mota brought the run in, with Mota picking up the RBI.
Dixie State answered back with a run in the bottom half of the first. Williams put the Lancers back up by two, 3-1, with a two-run, two-out homer made possible after another Trailblazer error extended the inning.
The Trailblazers rebounded again and knotted the score at 3-3 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and then took a 5-3 lead with two more runs in the sixth.
CBU erupted for four runs and a 7-5 lead in the eighth. The Lancers sent eight batters to the plate in the inning, which started with three-straight singles from Andrew Bash, Bell and Mota (who got his second RBI of the night). John Glenn came up big with a two-out, pinch-hit double that scored three Lancers.
The 7-5 lead was not enough, as Dixie State scored two in the eighth and one more in the ninth to complete the 8-7 comeback.
