RIVERSIDE, Calif. – If there was any question, California Baptist University proved it is playing its best baseball of the season right now as it swept Academy of Art with an 8-2 win Thursday afternoon at Totman Stadium.
The Lancers have now won seven games in a row and 14 of their last 15 to improve to 32-14, 25-11 in the PacWest. The Urban Knights end their season with a 24-25, 19-21 record. CBU wraps up its regular season on the road at Dixie State, with the four-game series starting Tuesday at 5 p.m. in St. George, Utah.
Andrew Bash and Tommy Bell both went 2-for-4 on Thursday. Bash logged two runs batted in, two doubles and scored once, while Bell had an RBI double and a run. Ryan Williams landed the big blow of the game, with a three-run homer in the bottom of the second inning. The senior center fielder finished would also score twice and draw two walks to go 1-for-2 on the day.
The Urban Knights took a 2-0 lead with a run in the first and second innings, but the Lancers did not wait long to make their comeback. A three-run bottom of the second put CBU in the driver's seat and it never gave it up in the series finale. Bell started the inning with a single to left field. Nick Plaia lashed a one-out double to left to put two runners in scoring position.
On the very next pitch, Williams turned on an inside pitch and skied a three-run homer way up into the netting in left field for a 3-2 CBU edge. A one-out walk to DJ Porter and consecutive doubles from Bash and Bell increased the Lancers' lead to 5-2 in the third.
A pair of errors, Rory Smith single, sacrifice fly from Luke Navigato and yet another RBI double off the bat of Bash scored three more runs to cap the scoring at 8-2 in the fifth inning.
Angel Delgado earned his third win of the season in his very first start for CBU. The senior right-hander gave up four hits, a walk, one earned run and struck out seven. The Lancer bullpen continued to be a strength, as it allowed just one hit and three walks over the final four innings. Jorge Valerio earned the first save of his career by throwing the final two innings in which he gave up just a walk.
