ST. GEORGE, Utah – An all-around offensive performance guided California Baptist University to a 13-3 win over Dixie State on Wednesday at Bruce Hurst Field.
It ties up the 18th-ranked Lancers' final PacWest series of the season at a game apiece, with an 11 a.m. PDT doubleheader set for Thursday. CBU moves to 33-15, 26-12 in the conference and is ranked 18th in NCAA Division II and third in the West Region, while the Trailblazers are 23-25, 19-19.
Eight different players had a hit for CBU, with D.J. Porter leading the way, going 3-for-6 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Andrew Bash (2-for-2, two runs); Luke Navigato (2-for-5, two runs) and John Glenn (2-for-5) all had two hits in the game, as well.
Angel Delgado got the win on the mound for the Lancers after giving up two runs and striking out seven in five innings. Matt Amrhein and Morgan Earman pitched strong out of the bullpen, with Amrhein not allowing a base runner and striking out two over two innings, while Earman gave up one walk and struck out two in the eighth inning.
A small two-out rally gave CBU a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Bash started it out with a single to left and Tommy Bell homered to left field for the first two runs of the game. The Trailblazers tied the game at 2-2 with a run each in the second and third innings.
The Lancers would then score 11 straight, starting with two in the fifth. Angelo Capolupo started the inning with a single and an error put Navigato on base and Capolupo on third. Porter drove in the lead runner with a single to left field and Bash added the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly.
Four more runs came home for CBU in the sixth, despite Dixie State getting the first two batters out in the inning. Walks to Bryce Macy, Navigato and an error loaded the bases, and Porter drove in two runs with a single to left field.
An intentional walk to Bash loaded the bases again in the inning. Kyle Oyama delivered this time, jumping on the first pitch he saw as a pinch hitter to score two more runs for an 8-2 lead.
The Lancers loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth and scored four more runs before the inning was over. A Porter single, walk to Bash and error put a Lancer on each base and Ryan Mota was hit by a pitch to score a run. A passed ball, wild pitch and RBI grounder from Glenn scored three more runs to make it 12-2.
CBU brought its 13th run home in the ninth. Bash hit a one-out double in the inning, took third on a Harrison Spohn single and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Mota.
